It's a tie between him and Michael Jackson... Been a fan of MJ for as long as I remember, and only knew Prince around a year ago (I knew there was a musician named Prince, and that he rivaled MJ in the 80's... but that's it).
But based on his 1979-1988 output he's made more music than MJ's entire solo career! so there you go

So we're only allowed to visit the sites of our "#1" artist? Prince USED to be...by a mile. But as I've grown...ahem...older...I've discovered a lot of new music and artists that excite me much more than him at this point in my life. I just got tired of all the lackluster releases...the constant bickering over copyrights...etc. I feel like he's just pulled away from everyone and everything that put him where he is today, and that's too bad. Also, knowing how much talent he has, it's just frustrating to sit back and watch him STILL try to do rap, hip hop, and "flavor of the day" R&B. The Prince music I fell in love with was original and had no boundries...that's what made it so great. Now it just seems like he's only interested in being popular again... Don't get me wrong...nothing makes me more excited even now than going to a Prince concert. No one will ever be able to touch him in that department methinks...seeing him live is still the best way to witness just how much talent he posseses. But until he starts making daring and original music again, I won't get those "release day" jitters like I used to... Oh...artists I'm currently in to more than Prince: - Dylan (no explanation necessary) - Tom Waits (the perfect example of an artist who has made challenging and oringial over his entire career) - Ryan Adams (his early material was prodigal-like...such mature songwriting for his age)

I like a variety of music, musical styles and artists.
I love Stevie Wonder too, but Prince is my favorite.

As a teenager in the eighties he was my fave, followed by David Bowie.
in my mid 20´s He lost his top spot to DylanAfter aquiring the Dylan taste many doors were opened to me. I remember really liking David Byrne and Leonard Cohen.Prince started to sound far too glossy At some point I was very busy with my own music career and had no interest in Fandom. Now I´m back into Prince, but he seems to be out of steam, Judging bye his last 3 albums. I still have some hope that he´ll return to making some very clever classy pop though. small circles, big wheels!
I've got a pretty firm grip on the obvious!
