The ONLY thing in the film that I was quite surprised with was when I saw who was playing P's mother. Before this, although P often muddled up his racial background, most fans, or all the ones that I knew, like myself, never questioned what P was. And in the media, Prince was always refered to as a black artist. Period. So for me, to see the actress playing his mother, was a surprise. The first thing I thought was "Wow...I wonder how does Prince's REAL mother feels about this?".

Yes I agree! Undermined? I've often wondered what his mother thought about a LOT of that movie actually, not to mention his father... I suppose he must have squared it away with them somehow.. I've said before on here, that they must have been uncomfortable with a lot of what was on that screen neutral

I think his parents knew that it was definately a "movie", strictly to support P's image and his reputation. BUT at the same time, for P to switch up his own mother's racial background, to coincide with P's racial myth that he ha built up...I was like "wow...show biz is powerful stuff."

The whole world's an illusion! wink Don't they talk about it on the dvd? When the directors etc are talking over the film... I'll need to go and watch it again, see what they say!

Yeah but not about P's mother in the film being played by a non black actress.

Great Story...Right Place Right Time..must be great looking back at this now hey BG cool

You know, it was a very "magical" happening. That whole Purple Rain era, for me, was like that. I had been into P for so long before that, so it was an automatic thing for me to go to the premire. But the whole thing involving the premire was very magical. Again, and I've stated this on here before, Prince tapped into something very forceful. I can see that he had hit a corner during the 1999 album and that tour. He had matured so quickly. He didn't even seem like the same cat from the Controversy period. I could see something on Prince. It was like he KNEW what was about to happen to him. Even his band members couldn't keep up. Dez was leaving, Vanity was leaving, The Time was breaking up. All in the mist of this incredible thing that was happening to P. Mark Brown really seemd like the only cat in P's band that was like "This is hella cool...I'm riding this ship." But Matt and Bobby voicing their opinion to P about the song When Doves Cry...even to them, they thought the song was weird. P was soooo ahead of everybody at that time.

This post reminds me of when I saw P on Solid Gold when he performed the track 1999. He "looked" totally different. He truly looked like he "knew" he was on his way to becoming a major star. He was already getting ready for Purple Rain but of course, no one outside his inner circle knew that yet. But I remember seeing Prince on that episode thinking "This cat is somewhere else." He had confidence just pouring off of him. He was wild too. Especially for t.v. He took off his trench and threw it off stage, he threw his guitar off stage too. He looked cooler in this episode than any frame in Purple Rain.
