I KNOW it doesn't make any sense BUT that's what I've always heard. It was never about me "listening for it" because nobody ever pointed this out to me. I heard this on my own. And don't know if it's at 3:26 or not cuz like I said, I don't have a counter on this cd. I'm not even sure if where u THINK I'm talking about is it. All I can state right now is when he says this lyric, if u you hear a sustained guitar note over P's singing, then THAT'S the spot I'm talking about. If u don't hear a sustained guitar note, then that's not the spot that I'm refering to.

And understand me, I'm cool with the fact if nobody else hears it or not. That's totally fine. Although funkpill was one of the cats that said he heard it on my initial thread about it. It was some others too, but I can't remember who they were. Oh well.

After listening to it again, nod yup he says it.

You have to listen very close

Had the headphones close to my ears lol

He says it and does some heavy breathin after the screams....yup nod

I LOVE the first verse - I love the humorous contradiction of crying when you are happy and smiling when you are blue.

It's the kind of thing that your parents say to you when you are down in the dumps because it would make you smile without even realising it.

It's very clever.

Really cute.. ahhhhh!

Don't sleep 'til the sunrise, listen 2 the falling rain
Don't worry 'bout tomorrow, don't worry 'bout your pain
Don't cry unless you're happy, don't smile unless you're blue
Never let that lonely monster take control of U
Shut up already, damn.

I might be 'flamed' for this, but personally i think and feel Prince, most of the time, is 'holding back' when showing his 'real' emotions on a song.

I know, he has done a lot of songs about 'emotional' issues, but often it sounds he has the tendency to 'alter' the emotions behind a certain lyric, so the song 'fits in' with the imago he is showing to 'us', just as if he is affraid to show the back of his tongue.

But, there sure are examples of songs that give me the idea, he is trying to be as honest and sincere as possible. It is either noticable in his vocal delivery, and/or otherwise in the content of the lyrics.

Among others, the following songs come to my mind at first:

- Purple Rain
- Forever in my life
- If I was your girlfriend
- The Holy River
- Letitgo
- Adore
- Comeback
- Old friends for sale (the original version, from 1985/1986)
- Still would stand all time
- How come you don't call me anymore

I KNEW I wasn't the only one to hear that. But again, like I stated earlier on this thread and on my thread about this, THAT'S the beauty part of it for me. Some hear it, some don't. And I prefer it that way.

I told you it was there 4b...I wouldn't steer you wrong, player. I first heard it very shortly after I first bought the album back in 82. I ALWAYS loved the song Free so I played it a lot. That's when I first noticed it. Like I said, P put that sustained guitar note over it, calling himself "disguising" it. But he really wasn't trying to do that, either. Cuz he wants u to hear it. He does that other places on this album. Like on the track "Automatic". During the lyric "I'll go down on u all night long" he tries to "shade" that line by having crash cymbals hitting on every word he says. That's the only place in the song where he does that.

I LOVE this song, he takes your ass to church, here. I agree that its very emotional, indeed. Without sounding contrived...

But I'm feeling a little left out on that MF part. I hear SOMETHING that's not the normal words (I'm so glad I'm free, etc, etc) But I can't hear it that clear. It sounds garbled to me... I'm gonna try some headphones...

Oh, I heard it too, today in my car!! Well the end of it anyway! I didn't need headphones, once you know about the sustained guitar note, you can hear it quite easily! I was quite excited! Very cool cool

I would actually have to go with "Solo" off of COME. He take his voice to so many levels on this song. Very solemn and powerful.

"Solo, my name is No One".

With songs like "Dark" and "Papa" I think there is a lot of emotion behind this album. Very, Very underated album. A very strong, moody, and erratic lineup. With the erratic lineup you can tell Prince was definitely going through some growing pains during this time.

I used to sit in church as a kid on Christmas Eve (the only time mom made us go) and imagine myself performing Free up on the stage. It should of been a single instead of Automatic, especially with all the talk of nuclear war back then - it would of been very successful.

Huh?...Automatic was never released as a single. I wish it was but it wasn't.

Actually is was a 7" single released overseas. I only know this because I remember the video being played on BET when they would have an all Prince marathon on Video Vibrations. It was the same performace based video as all videos from 1999.

Yeah I'm hip to the videos from the 1999 album, even "Let's Pretend We're Married" although that video was rarely shown. At least over here in the States. I wasn't hipped to the fact that "Automatic" was released as a single overseas. Cool. I always bitched on here about that song NOT being released as a single over here when I felt it should have been.
