Lets be different and say his 90s period was solid!

GIVE ME A BREAK... Let's be realistic about the 1990 to 2008 phase of his career. PRINCE's worst albums and songs come from this latest time period. Prince didn't have one horrible album from 1979 to 1988. The 90's with the come album, the vault, nps, rave, his last 3 works. Prince has had maybe 5 solid works since 1990. I think there are fans on here that just say his 90s works are good, just for the hell of it. I'll be hip and say that jughead and now! match his superior time period. princes worst filler 80s material kills his 90s period. i think i can hear inspiring innovative works. led zeppelin, U2, and so on had historic works. Prince's music has been basically average witha few highs since the 90's. he played catchup with the hip-hop and rap trends beause he panicked. Prince's lovesexy didn't sell and he felt he had to rap and be something that he was not. the trendsetting 80s prince was innovative and quirky as can be. Prince had his own Minneapolis sound with the 1999 album. he created no new ground from 89 and on. people who say that his 90s works were great have no idea what classic music is.peace!!

let me go out on a limb and say most of the responses will be pro 90's. it's hard to believe that fans since 1978 would really dig the second half of his career

I think Prince's 90's golden moment was the I'll Do Anything shelved album and The Truth.

Some stuff I like here & there,,,,but its not a period where I'll spend so much attention to. I'd say though, his unreleased stuff then was BETTER than the released ones. I think the reason for that because he was more commercially driven than the 80s,,,not that its a bad thing.

any prince fan who says the 90s were a solid period have to get there ears checked out. RIDICULOUS is what a lot of prince's crappy 90s works were. 5 GOOD albums and the rest were horrble. chaos &disorder, come, rave, nps, the vault, the last 3 works,. prince's worst 80's songs would make for a great 90s album.....peace!

MAYBE PEOPLE (like myself) WHO DIG HIS music in the 90'S up 2 now are saying they like it because..well lets take a stab in the dark here...erm..BECAUSE THEY REALLY LIKE IT and appreciate it

Its your opinion of whatever you may think about his music from the 90's till now and i know that his music from 1979 - the late 80's no body could mess with but i think he still does his thing and makes good music hense songs like 'most beautiful girl in the world' 'Gold' 'black sweat' 'musicology' and others. But thats just my opinion

I like Prince's 90's work overall. He came out with inconsistent albums, but on those albums were some of the best songs he's done to date.

Plenty of 90's tracks like The Love We Make and Shhh easily hold their own against 80's classics like Purple Rain and If I Was Ur Girlfriend.

The main problem with the 90's era of Prince is twofold. One, the battle with WB had unfortunate consequences for both the marketing and tracklisting decisions of his albums. Also, Prince tended to be a little insecure at times, adding unnecessary elements like rappers and garish production techniques into some of his music.

The genius is still there, though.

Here's a 100% fact for ya. If the body of work from TGE [1995] onwards and tours were released/done by any other artist we would all be fans and proclaim them to be a genius. But put that body of work up against his 80's stuff is impossible as it was so damn good and above all else with each album & tour upto Lovesexy he had a point to prove.

Great Point! I would rank P's 80's decade with any other artist in the history of popular music (albums, vault, b-sides, remixes, other projects, concerts, films). It's totally unfair to hold him to that standard at the apex of his creativity. If you edit the 90's, you actually have a brilliant box set. I prefer P's creative process, than the majority of bands/pop stars who put out a few shopworn "products" every 2-4 years.
