To me a ballad is indeed sometimes a ballad for the form (Do Me Baby), other times it's the message (Something In The Water), other times it's the emotion, like The Question Of U or Old Friends 4 Sale. That last one isn't a ballad text-wise, but emotionally, and music-wise it is.

But I bet if you took a poll of all Prince fans, you and maybe Tame would probably be the only ones to categorize "Something in the Water" as a ballad.
