Purple Music - Is This The Most Trippy Stuff He Ever Recorded Or What? 5 years since I heard it, and to this DAY I discover something new about it upon another listen.
Def one of the most prolific tunes that came outta his mind Some people can't understand, just bein' inside a church don't make a righteous man! I love that era,,,,1982 was a sepcial year in music.

I wish this could be in an official release. I used to listen to it lots of times, but just when I know I can sit down and relax.
I'm pretty much enthralled with this track, I like it, it's kind of hypnotic. Just as other material he recorded in those years.

I love this tune. is it available in ex+ quality yet?, i had a go at clearing it up myself once, i'm not that good though, shame it's one of my favourite unreleased tunes.
can i at least ask which bootleg has the best quality version?

I only have the one from the 1st volume of the work,,,,I could use a better quality myself too, but I won't hold my breath about it.

Easily one of my all time favorite Prince songs and one of his best songs PERIOD. The song continues to blow my mind and it's been 7 years since I first heard it. Last year was the first time I heard the whole song in it's entirety and blown away doesn't even properly describe how I felt when I heard the last 3 minutes of Purple Music. I hope one day, this song will see the light of day. It could still be a hit if Prince wanted it to be. Amaizing song from an amazing artist. And I agree with Harlepolis, 1982 was an incredible year for Prince music and music in general. [Edited 7/3/08 6:20am] I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Definately one of those only-Prince-can-pull-this-off kind of tracks. Pure genius. Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

A forgotten masterpiece for sure, should have been a B-side at least but it was probably too long to be edited.
Edit this mofo in any way and it loses its overall power to blow your mind

don't need no cocaine purple music does the same 2 my brain and i'm high ...so high just being inside of a church don't make a righteous man man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I read in DMSR that it was supposed to be in 1999, but the record label replaced it with All The Critics Love You In NY.
Come to think of it(and ya'll welcome to correct me if I'm mistaken) It was part of the official 1999 tracklist among: Extra Loveable No Call U Moonbeam Level(A Place To Die) Baby You're A Trip(And & A 1/2). As we can see, the tracklist got shortened BIIIIG bitch move.

Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

You know, this is really the only cut from 82 that I DON'T like. Well, maybe I shouldn't say I don't like it. I'm not crazy about it though either. It's too repetitive. Not enough ideas for it to be as long as it is. Not like it's a track like Automatic. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Agree with that. Any time I listen to it, I think it might be better than I remember or I'll enjoy it more. But no, it wears out its welcome fairly early on.

Agreed...too repetitive, and I don't dig the trancey vibe.

I know I aint ever gonna hear it so can anyone describe what the song actually sounds like? All I know so far is that a few of you said it was repeitive and trancy. What instrumentation? What kind of beat? Any hornz? Who are the players? Lyrics? C'mon people. Throw us a bone.

What kind of beat? Any hornz? Who are the players? Lyrics? C'mon people. Throw us a bone. It sounds similar to "All The Critics Love You In New York". Here are the lyrics. From DTT Purple Music CHORUS: Don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine Purple music does the same 2 my brain And I'm high, so high Don't need no cymbals, no saxophone Just need 2 find me a style of my own And I'm high, so high Some people can't understand Just bein' inside a church don't make a righteous man U're high, so high In time we all die, all music gone So we better try our best 2 get along And get high, so high, oh Ain't got no theory, ain't got no rules I just let the purple music tell my body what 2 do And I'm high, so high Every subject, any key Purple music can't be judged, it happens naturally It's alright, alright, oh We'll find a serpent 2 sacrifice We'll make a wish and then we'll visit purple paradise We'll get high, yes we will, so high CHORUS Next page ... Don't want reaction, I just want the act It's easier 2 give love than it is 2 give it back Cuz I'm high, so high Oh, oh, oh No reefer, don't need cocaine Purple music does the same 2 my brain And I'm high, oh Don't need no cymbals, no saxophone I just need 2 find me a style of my own And I'm high, oh I'd love some I'm high, so high CHORUS We'll find a sacrifice 2 get some purple paradise So nice, purple paradise is so nice Yeah! Baby, baby, I say, I say, I say Oh, oh, oh yeah, oh yeah If U understand my color Put your hand in your crotch No, no, no, no, no, yes! CHORUS Don't need no cymbals, no saxophone I just need 2 find me a style of my own And I'm high, so high Some people can't understand Just bein' inside a church don't make a righteous man And U're high U got 2 be high In time we all die, all music gone So we better try 2 get along And get high, so high All get high I ain't got no theory, I ain't got no rules I just let the purple music tell my body what 2 do And I'm high, so high Every subject, any key Purple music can't be judged, it happens naturally Ain't it alright? Ain't it alright? Don't try 2 fight it It's time 4 your morning bath, sir What would U like 2 bathe in this morning? With all due respect sir, I think that it .. I think that it might .. Oh, oh no I don't want 2 play anymore {x2} Purple music does things 2 my brain and I'm high Step on it That's right Drive, U idiot Faster, faster! Don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine Purple music does the same 2 my brain And I'm high, oh yeah Don't need no cymbals, no saxophone I just need 2 find me a style of my own And I'm high Some people can't understand Just bein' inside a church don't make a righteous man And U're high, yeah Some people think I'm kinda cute

I agree with blackguitaristz, it is pretty repetitive. I love the track, but compared to the longest tracks on 1999, you can see why it might've been looked over.

The instrumentation is killer. I'd love to know how much studio wizardry went into that, though P's timing is unbelievable.
The vamp is a trip. [Edited 7/6/08 5:19am]

The vamp is a trip. I've thought of that,,, Peggy McCreary(the album's engineer) said that when Prince starts to record a track, its unusual that he won't finish it @ the same day/night. I'm thinking how he did he deal with that pressure,,,,esp since he recorded OTHER people in the same time? Crazy!
