I think Prince has the most incredibly loyal and upbeat fans. I witnessed this first hand after the croke park fiasco. I mean come on, the fans organised a tribute band, a bar with purple cocktails and a night of fun in the face of misery and rejection. I'm starting to think he doesn't deserve us.

it's really simple to get seduced into thinking that what you're listening to is so brilliant, that its perfection to YOUR ears is a simple matter of natural fact, and that there could be no way on earth that anyone could argue the clear superiority of this great music.

yeah, i get that. it's an easy mode to fall into, because the music makes you feel so good.

but at the end of the day, it's all 100% subjective. my mother never liked the SOTT album. she thought there was too much filler on it. she thought "it" and "hot thing" were the same song. she didn't think there was enough guitar on it. we could argue her opinions all the livelong day, but it wouldn't have made her like that album any more than she did.

i think "chaos & disorder" and "come" are great prince albums, and i think people get too distracted by the whole "contractual obligations" aspect to really explore the music. i think anyone who discounts songs like "i like it there" and "space" are doing themselves a great disservice. but that's me. i know people who like "1999: the new master", and god bless them.

our views on music are subjective. and i offer that comment as FACT.
