Agreed 100%. People act like everything he does is golden, when it is spotty, at best. Great thread

Making statements like the one you just made will get you insulted, laughed at and probably ostricized. There are many factions here on the Org, but for the most part it shakes out into THREE. The "old-heads" who long for the early glory days and think that pretty much anything P did after say Lovesexy or so is crap. The "youngins" who think that Prince is doing his best material right now and think that the older material is over-rated. And the ever-popular "kool-aid kids" who also refer to themselves as "fams". They think that everything Prince ever did is genius. Every album is a masterpiece, every movie should have received Oscars. They will react with great vengeance and furious anger (i know) upon the mere mention that something P did wasn't "great". They also look down their noses at any musician that is remotely compared to Prince or that doesn't play at least 4 instruments. They also tend to type in Prince-speak. (u know.) Good luck. Tread carefully. I must be a Jan-Brady-Kid...I'm not a huge fan of the super early stuff or the super late stuff. I like the stuff in the middle best. I think there is a 4th faction. Those of us who think that after Lovesexy was just fine and know he has produced some ofhis exciting material after 89, yet don't think every thing he does is gold. We will buy and check out the new albums, but seeing as P has been doing this for years, our expecttaions are not that high. He comes out with an album. Promotes it or not. There will be some good songs and some crappy ones. Not Kool-aid drinkers but not Old-heads either. Christian Zombie Vampires

I feel the same way. A REAL fan accepts the fact that Prince has his bad songs too.....and that's okay. MyeternalgrattitudetoPhil&Val.Herman said "We want sweaty truckers at the truck stop! The absolute worship of any individual is nutty. But seeing that one can go anywhere and a get a list of all of Prince's faults and hear all the nasty crap, it's nice to have a place that accentuates and focuses on the positives. At least that's how I feel.

Prince's best material was 80-87. No question about it. Lovesexy was a noticeable drop off in quality (though "Anna Stesia" is up there with the 80-87 material). Even the best track on Graffiti Bridge, "Joy In Repetition", was written during his golden period. the music knows what your motives are when you are making it

BLACK QUITARIST Z u aren't a real true prince fan if u think signo'the times wasn't a classic album. when my brother and i first heard sign we had huge smiles on our faces. it blows away anything that he would ever try 2 do again. when i'm at a prince concert give me is classic solid era. i wouldn't want 2 hear anything from his last 3 albums live at all. prince's music doesnt have that connection that it did back in hid glory years. why can't anyone be reasonable and say hey he'll never have that muse ever again. all of the fans who even try 2 compare the 90's stuff to his 80's material can't br done. there will be fans who will try 2 downplay his 80's works. they'll say i didn't dig sign of the times or parade which is ridiculious. THERE ARE NO 90's SONGS THAT WOULD MAKE MY TOP 50 PRINCE SONGS OF ALL TIME. all of those tracks come from his 79 to 88 collection. 17 days vs. NOW!, the beautiful ones vs. the morning papers, and so on. PRINCE's 80s material is timless and we'll last 4ever. i wouldn't tell a new prince fan 2 purchase any of his last 3 albums. i would tell him the gold experience, D&P, emancipation and TRC. the horrible albums: chaos and disorder, come, the vault,,,,, ANY PRINCE FAN WHO PUTS THOSE ALBUMS AS HIS BEST ARE ONLY KIDDING THEMSELVES!! "come on", "the one", "wasted kisses" and "mad sex" are fine songs. 5. ok, i'm with ya there. 6. i'm with ya there (though probably not as adamantly, cuz at least i'll listen to it now and again) 7. not quite with ya there, but it's not so great that i'm gonna argue with you about it 8. i agree wholeheartedly

Because that would be an unreasonable thing to say. Exactly And with that question, why must we conform to that way of thinking? Why is that "reasonable"? We can make up our own minds with this, and NO I'm not being touchy on this subject but I'll be damned if I let somebody come up on this board and tell me what to think and how to be "reasonable". That's unacceptable. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

all of his weaker works come from 1989 to the present. it's just the reality of it all. there are fans who feel prince can't do anything wrong. prince has maybe had 5 good albums since 1989. while he was very consistent pre 1989. prince is a legend because of his hall of fame 1980 to 87 period. linnm1 is very objective and knows where i'm coming from BOB4theFUNK

It's so funny how some of you continue to be so confused about posts here.
EVERYTHING we all post is an opinion, there is no right or wrong in art. Nobody is posting mathematical equations here. The consensus, by the general public, professional people who review music for a living, his own contemporaries, and me as well is,..... whether you like it or not that his 80's work is his pinnacle. Don’t feel upset by that, it’s not a fact, just a general consensus nothing more. Having said that, I love “Hudson Hawk” & “Showgirls” two of the supposed worst movies of all time, I don’t get upset when people say they’re bad, ..I get it. So there I said it, Prince's 90’s work = “Showgirls” [Edited 7/2/08 22:19pm]
