I think that being interested in Prince's way of expressing his heart...Is just as nice of a quality to be listening to...rather than expecting that every song be a musical masterpiece. I like some songs, or collections of songs better than other's...and at the same time, I like all of Prince's work.
I believe that those of us that get touchy, are people that don't want to see Prince's character attacked, because we love him...I don't desire to be defensive, if someone doesn't like something about the music... "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

Um, hello? I didn't even bother to read the other responses on this thread. Welcome to the Org! Making statements like the one you just made will get you insulted, laughed at and probably ostricized. There are many factions here on the Org, but for the most part it shakes out into THREE. The "old-heads" who long for the early glory days and think that pretty much anything P did after say Lovesexy or so is crap. The "youngins" who think that Prince is doing his best material right now and think that the older material is over-rated. And the ever-popular "kool-aid kids" who also refer to themselves as "fams". They think that everything Prince ever did is genius. Every album is a masterpiece, every movie should have received Oscars. They will react with great vengeance and furious anger (i know) upon the mere mention that something P did wasn't "great". They also look down their noses at any musician that is remotely compared to Prince or that doesn't play at least 4 instruments. They also tend to type in Prince-speak. (u know.) Good luck. Now I can't speak for all Prince fans but to me, I wouldn't say that Prince fans are touchy so much as many fans like me, don't like it when people act like their opinions are facts when they are just simply opinions. I'm not a fan of fans who come off as self-righteous. You come off like you're an expert on all things Prince and you're not, you're just a fan. Just because you don't feel the stuff Prince did after 1989 the same way you did the music Prince did pre-1989 doesn't make it crappy, you just don't care for it much. MANY fans here like, even love the stuff Prince did after Lovesexy, including me. I'm not saying that Prince didn't lay a turd after 1989 or even before 1989 but music hits people differently and it should be respected as such. [Edited 7/1/08 14:03pm] exactly my point..there r some would u belive it or not that hate sign o the times but some would rather hear songs from his 90's rather than the 80's. does this mean that they r any less a fan because of it? NO! it's the opinion and it's their taste not factual and certainly not the end and b all of all his creative output. man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

u say it right here in ur post that "i like ..." again ur entitled 2 ur opinion where as some of the albums u mentioned imo r great. 4 instance: come -brilliant album only thing is solo doesn't do anything 4 me the vault- when the lights go down is brilliant, sarah is funny and she spoke 2 me is dazzling rave - hot wit u, the sun the moon and stars, tangerine, prettyman r xcellent cuts nps- not a prince album so it doesn't count in my book 3121- everything with the xception of satisfied and the dance are great musicology- title track, illusion, cinnamon girl, reflection and the back 2 back cuts of if i was, and the marrying kind pe - only shoe and guitar float my boat. what i'm trying 2 say is that even the songs i mentioned above, some like as well and some others don't. so what i prefer doesn't make it fact, it's just my opinion just as u have stated about what u like so 2 answer ur topic thread, i think and i may b wrong here, is that it's NOT prince fans that get so touchy, it could b u cause not everyone is siding along with ur view of prince's music man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

It only dawned on me lately that by sticking with the old stuff and not embracing the newer stuff (after 1989) I had been furiously left behind.
This became apparent at the After Show parties at the Indigo Lounge. Here I managed to get a spot right at the front but was unable to sing along with half of the tunes as I didn't know them, AND had passed them off as not very good. After my fourth or so aftershow I realised what a mistake I had made. I was loving EVERYTHING I was hearing and only wishing I knew it better to gain full appreciation of the experience. After this experience I have revisited EVERYTHING after Lovesexy, which I had previously been very sniffy about. I realise now how wrong I was and that there are some truly amazing songs on each and everyone one of his albums. Infact now I am a fully fledged convert to the newer stuff and love it more than I ever thought I would. In short I guess 'I get it!' Seeing him live definately turned it around for me. I have NOT stopped listening to '3121'..the first aftershow at the Indigo lounge he played this. Also 'I Like It There'... I thought this was an amazing song when I heard it live. I couldn't believe it was Prince and that it had been lying there on Chaos and Disorder for all those years without me listening to it. Let alone the song 'Chaos and Disorder' which is abslutely amazing and 'I Rock Therefore I Am' Shut up already, damn.

Let alone the song 'Chaos and Disorder' which is abslutely amazing and 'I Rock Therefore I Am' welcome 2 the dawning of a new spiritual revolution man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I think it's statements like yours that get people riled. I believe it's when people state their opinions as FACT is when issues arise. Many feel that he has had many good songs and good albums since the 80's so there is that argument. Many feel he is still on top of his game and cranking out classics like he used to so there's that argument. I like to be somewhere in the middle...His older output is just as ecclectic as the newer stuff and even the older music still had it's clunkers. I find his current output as good if not better than what's out there already and like all his albums there are still gems to be found. Though I feel he isn't taking as many misks musically as he did and I find the lyrical content...lacking I still find the music enjoyable and sometimes thrilling. Christian Zombie Vampires

I always found that odd. Not wrong...just odd. I've never seen it before. You must not watch LOST then talk about crazy wakadoos on those forums Honestly I think the negativity balances out the positivity for P music. I also think that Price does some negative things to his band, fans and promotion...many times he can be a Prick. I think a lot of negativity spewed by the fans comes from the way he treats us. It shouldn't but it does. Not to compare him to her again....Madonna may be a beeotch, but she loves her fans and it shows...she is very generous with them. You know like has a website and has a vehicle of communication between her music and her fans. Price fans hear what he's up to via news articles and is never upfront about what to expect on any front. Christian Zombie Vampires

I still think he is one of the best live acts of all time. i just think that it's obvious that his supreme works came from his 79 to 88 period. he connected with the audience musically. prince's image and music went hand and hand on each of those works. prince statred 2 follow the trends after 1988. prince was the trend setter from 79 to 88. i'm not being a hater..i'm just speaking the truth of a long time prince fan. i would rather here when u were mine live over NOW!.... the 90's music had alot more filler and half baked ideas. PRINCE's brain was at its height from 79 to 88. his vision was clear of what direction he was going in.
And that is your opinion. Nothing is obvious. Christian Zombie Vampires
