that's not saying a whole lot in my opinion, but i agree with you. NPS is definitely better than Planet Earth. It's a bad album overall, but a lot of fans exaggerate its poor quality. Mad Sex and Shoo-Bed-Ooh are fine, and Wasted Kisses and The One are great. The real show stopper on this album, though, is definitely Come On. That track trumps anything on Planet Earth. What really kills the majority of NPS are its banal lyrics. I don't accept the argument that this is just a fun party album and doesn't need good lyrics, either because a lot of Prince's 80's material was lighthearted yet lyrically witty. [Edited 6/20/08 14:48pm] Agree with the assessment. The album had a cool throw-away quality to it but the overall simplistic lyrics give you nothing to chew on for the ages. I do love Mad Sex and Come On which are funky, sexy, musically daring, clever and smart! I think these two songs belong on a Prince top 30 list and any songs that make that list redeem the album. I can't say that for any of the average songs on Planet Earth - no top 30's.

I've always loved this album
'Push It Up' and ' Like Funky Music' are low-points, but 2 out of 11 ain't bad. And the great thing is, even though we all know it's actually a Prince album in all but name, any criticisms of it can be excused by the fact that it's an 'NPG' album. Everybody wins!

I thought you were going to say you fell asleep to New Power Soul and then were rudely awaken by the return of noise by Wasted Kisses after all that blank space beforehand. Speaking of which, I just put this album on my ipod and it was a bitch getting all those silence tracks off of there. Apparently you can't delete multiple tracks in one click on iTunes? It wasn't so terrible. They say Push It Up enough on the song that before I knew it I started singing it. Then I went and stopped like that! It's still not my cup of tea but it's not a craptastic affair either. I should get a T-Shirt that says "I survived "Push It Up"! ! RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Am i really missing something there? I hated Rave until I put it on my ipod. I'd hear the songs and wonder what they were. I was shocked that I was really loving Rave! Not all of it.
