I didn't think it came "directly" from Housequake but I noticed the similarity right away. I've noticed lots of Prince influences in Pharrell or the Neptunes productions. (They produced "Wanna Love You Girl" btw) One example is Britney Spears' "I'm A Slave 4 U." Apart from the obvious Prince-bonics, consider: when Britney says "are you ready?" in the song it reminded me of Mayte saying the same thing with the same inflection in "Pussy Control" - a song that came out during the era when Prince had "slave" scrawled across his face. Both songs are the same tempo (BPM) as well.
Musically, Kelis' "Milkshake," also produced by the Neptunes, was like the lost track Prince coulda-but-never did. "Milkshake" and Robin's song are near the same tempo as well. I'm positive that SOMEONE in the Neptunes team has been influenced by Prince. But then again, what creator of contemporary r&b music with minimalist leanings COULDN'T have been? For a while I thought Missy Elliott was the reincarnation of good ol' 80's Prince. I still love her but think maybe it was more of Timbaland's contributions from that time period that led me in that direction. Or I could be just crazy and obsessed. I'm sure that other like-minded individuals will hear that "Housequake" beat in the crazy breakdown of the Pussycat Dolls new song "When I Grow Up," the version that's heard in their video. break THE purple GoD | |
