A Prince related vinyl dig (sort of)

I went on a vinyl dig in a local thriftshop and found a Warners compilation album, presumably made in 1983, called Club Dancing '83. What really got me interested was the fact that side 2 has back-to-back Prince's 1999 (single version), Vanity 6's Nasty Girl and The Time's 777-9311 (single version unfortunately)....
While I have been able to find almost all 80s Prince albums on vinyl I have had trouble finding associated artists like The Time and Vanity 6 so this was quite a find for me. biggrin
Here's a picture of the back of the album I took. Has anybody seen this compilation before?

No, never seen it before but I´m quite surprised to see him on an early 80s COMPILATION album . As far as I remember, I´d never seen him on any compilation album up until the mid or late 90s. Until then, you´d occasionally see a new song here or there on some movie soundtrack album ( like Bright Lights, Big City ) or promotional albums like Strange Tales from the Rain or stuff like The Crown Jewels but , as I said above, I never knew he was on any compilation album before the 90s.Great find. I bet that record is quite a collector´s item ?

That might be true, because I tried to google it and the only thing I could find that referenced this LP was THIS thread! lol I'm not sure which territories got this compilation album, but I do know it was pressed in Germany so it must have been released in some European countries. The label on the record itself has the "Side 1" "Side 2" text and some copyright stuff written in ICELANDIC which makes this record even rarer.

The top right of the cover says France ... interesting ... great find!

Prince/Vanity 6/The Time were called "Triple Threat" back then, which explains their grouping on a compilation.

I did see that album years ago...I didn't purchase it..because I had most of those artist's full albums, at the time.

I used to have a various artist K-Tel compilation on cassette back in the day. It had "Controversy" on it along with other songs such as "Super Freak" by Rick James, "Let It Whip" by The Dazz Band, and "A Night To Remember" by Shalamar.

Also, during the disco era, I remember we had a "Music Day" where the classmates brought a record to school and the music teacher would play the records. One of my classmates had a K-Tel disco compilation that had "I Wanna Be Your Lover". "The Second Time Around" by Shalamar and "Knock On Wood" was also on that same album. That girl had brought the best album to school that day. We played several cuts off of her's. lol

Dude, this is a good thing - people pay good money for single edits.

The album is easy to find, less so the single. wink

I just recently tried to search for stuff about this album in my OWN language and I did find out that this compilation album was indeed made by Warners BUT my copy was pressed in Iceland, not Germany, although the back cover says so. I'm lucky that all the big local newspapers have online archives dating back to for instance that time period. I did find out that this compilation was a big seller over here, reaching number 2 at one point in the charts (!). So I guess a lot of people in Iceland got their first taste of Prince with that LP. But I did find a REVIEW about this compilation and the critic was not exactly happy about the Jamie Starr/Prince produced stuff:
"Although side one has it flaws, they're nothing compared to the first four songs on side two (note - this is the Prince produced stuff plus Laura Branigan's Gloria). What a piece of garbage. The songs do have an OK dance-beat but that's it. The melodies are either barely there or just plain boring and it's hard to imagine how this stuff got popular..... ewwww."
I've never seen such a trashy review about Prince's stuff. Yikes. lol
