The shooting script i read, is almost shot for shot exactly as it was released, which is incredible to me, the intro with all the editing is all spelled out ,all the songs with the exception of G-spot and electric intercourse being omited.
In the rehearsal scene when Prince is late and Wendy plays the guitar part to "Lets Go Crazy", in the script it was supposed to be G-spot, then she sais her lets go crazy part "But there is something else...)

Vanity was still the named on the script to the last minute it seems, all of Morris's "whahhhawks" are there in the script exactly as in the movie which i find hilarious!

I just read it now (first time) I wish most of those scenes could have been kept in. I always wanted to see more conversation with Prince and his mother. I saw most of the scenes i read, like the barn scene, in the 'When doves cry video' and in the preview of purple rain the part with Prince pulling apollonia in the rehearsal studio. Thanks for the link to the script.

I think if the scenes in the screenplay (later omitted from the movie) were included it would have been too intense--especially the train, mother and rape scenes. Too dark for mainstream movie goers at that time? neutral

I must say it definitely is much darker than what has now become the official "Purple Rain" movie. There was definitely more dark and grittier stuff happening there: Prince starting shit with The Time in their rehearsal space, Prince getting hardcore with Apples, the fellas from the Revolution acting a fool towards the ladies, the borderline incestuous relationship between the Kid and his mom, etc. I don't wanna give too much away, but there was a whole lot more happening than what made the final cut. I also heard that a lot of these were filmed. In fact, some of these parts can be seen in the original trailer.

You know what, the original script would've been like "8 Mile" way before "8 Mile" lol

I read this a LONG time ago(about 4-5 years ago). Where have you been? rolleyes

Thanks, interesting read. I prefer the edited version though. I think the rape scene and the fight with Jelly bean would have been too much. I wonder how much came from his purple notebook.

I read the script a year ago boy was I surprised by the gritty dark tone of the story very weird that they wanted to call it "Dreams" so fucking corny man.

it truly makes me want those deleted scenes from all 3 movies after reading this..and it makes so much more sense 2 have some of the scenes kept in..the whole delivery of flowers by morris imo is a good example of editing. but still, i want 2 c all those shots filmed hammer

I think thats a very good embellished version of the film, theres nothing that suggests its real.

Prince is referred to as prince throughout ad the bike and the train race bit is so corny and has nothing to do with the plot. Or the rape scene, it just doesnt make sense.

'and the music continues....forever!'

if this is real then what came first the film play or the songs that made it?

-----
It is real. There are other links not edited by this person and you can see some of the scences in the trailer for the movie. The director discussed some of the cut scences the the DVD for PR. In addition, songs were being written while the movie was actually being filmed.

mesmerized

was recently watching the film with the commentary. I think some of the footage was cut, other parts were lost.
I don't think the rape scene would have ever been shot (which I think is a good thing, becuase the fact that he wacks her, i always thought was a little too full on for me).

I would have liked to have seen more of the relationship bw the kid and his mum. It's a creepy storyline, but interesting, and I think the film glossed over it (I never really understood that the mother was an alcoholic etc untill I read this script)

I really, really, really, favor that old script over the finished movie. I think That PR kinda got edited and hacked to pieces. I mean, you can see half those scenes in the "When Doves Cry" montage. (Ohhhh, I hate that montage scene, it really shows the bad editing decisions. Those scenes should have been shown in full)

Not to mention the fact that MY GIRL was in the original script!

One day, I want a DVD with deleted scenes. But I doubt they were kept/kept in good condition because this was so much before DVD's and the studio wouldn't have a reason to keep them,

If I could go back in time I'd tell The Kid to release the full orginal version as planned. Though I suspect the suits at Warner had more to do with the heavy editing than Our Hero did. I hear they weren't overly keen on the whole movie idea in the first place, hence the minimal budget. They probably figured keeping all the gritty details in as planned would've pushed the edge beyond audience-friendly fare. I mean, the original script does imply he was having sex with his mom.

Well, excuuuuuse me for trying! *rolls neck* rolleyes

lol Just kidding. Honestly, everytime the original script is referenced to, the above link is what always provided. As for the soundtrack, some of the music was put together before filming begin; where as others, such as Take Me With U, were written at the suggestion of some of the films producers to tie-in with particular sequence (according to the 2nd disc of the 20th Anniversary release).

confused That explains why Take Me With U is so crap compared to the rest of the soundtrack.

Here's the original incarnation of the script when the movie was still in it's Dreams phase:

There is an earlier version of it floating around that starts with Prince's dad shooting himself. That one has Vanity in it.

See, you can detect those darker and grittier elements in movies like "8 Mile". And that movie had some pretty risque content. But that's OK by today's standards. But back in 1984, I don't think Prince or William Blinn or Albert Magnoli or any of them would've gotten away with the original script for PR. I'm actually fine with the final results anyways. shrug I think they were really trying to make the movie a vehicle for Prince and his music and the whole music scene in Minneapolis anyways since that hasn't been done before.

The barn scene was never in the film. There were clips of it in the trailer...and in the video for When Doves Cry. But it was never in the film.

And the script that is on the internet looks like a working screenplay - the one Albert Magnoli worked from. The "original original" was written by William Blinn - and by all accounts, was radically different from what was shot. (Jill had a much larger role, for example.)
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

This is a great discussion and it makes me more excited about the 25th anniversary. Legend has it that Purple Rain was originally given an X rating by the MPAA. This was supposed to have been reported by MTV back in 1984 although I cannot find any articles or news clips. Uptown magazine reported this in one issue. If this is true, one would have to assume that there was another cut of Purple Rain that possibly included the 2nd love scene and/or the “rape” scene. I always assumed that Al Magnoli, being an editor, knew that the movie would run long and decided to leave certain scenes out of preliminary edits. This includes everything that was deleted after Prince seduces Apollonia in his basement straight through to when they both return to her apartment and possibly the “rape” scene (if it was filmed). But this MPAA story threatens to obliterate my theory. An X rated cut of Purple Rain had to include the 2nd love scene or the “rape” scene.

Lastly, if the 1983-1984 work print (with minimal extra footage) managed to get leaked and bootlegged, could this mean that an earlier edit is out there somewhere?
