How about somebody stepping up to the plate, and in an intelligent fact-based manner, list the innovations (with strict adherence to the meaning of the word) that Prince has initiated.

Anyone?

come on, now. No one did splits before Prince, and you know it. hmm

1...Funk without a bassline ..."kiss"...When doves cry"?
2...One man band on most of his albums (starting at age 19)
3...a 20 something musician directing his own movie ...
4...a Musician creating whole albums with voices and all instruments for a group (the times first 3 albums)...
5...fusing rock,punk,gospel,funk,pop in songs repeatedly...
6...only musician in his generation who does all styles of music(all of his albums)...you have rock musicians, pop artistes, country artiste, latin, reggae, hip hop,r&b,gospel...then you have PRINCE !!!
7...simutaneous live concert transmitted to movie theatres,
8...most copied artist of his generation ...Chaka Khan,Sinead O'connor,TLC ,Mariah Carey,Tom Jones,Rod Stewart,Foo Fighters,Leanne Rimes,Genuwine,MC Hammer... need 2 more hours to type the whole list of people who did a Prince song and got a hit ...Sinead & Chaka both got "song or record of the year" for theire efforts.

Is he a musical genius ?

Just in the past couple weeks I've discovered two Prince "borrowings" from Jimi Hendrix: The beat from "Tick Tick Bang" and, on the CD I've only had a couple days now, "Electric Ladyland" Jimi uses the phrase "Sugar Walls."

Anyone know the story on this term: did Jimi originate it, popularize it, or just borrow it from some previous source?

Either way, "Sugar Walls" is cool.

I'll give you an "E" for Effort. thumbs up!

A few points i'll touch on...

~ Others have done the one-man-band trip before (Stevie Wonder (99% anyway), Todd Rundgren, Paul McCartney, etc) but generally get over the novelty of it after an album or two.

~ If you're referring to Under The Cherry Moon as a director, don't think i'd put that in an "innovation" category for any reason.
If anything, it'd be a reason to not let a 20 year old direct a movie.

~ The idea of simulcasting to theatres is not unique. It's been done with boxing for decades. But since you referenced a concert, we'll stick to that.

Prior to the tour, Petty and his band will perform the new album in its entirety at an Oct. 15 concert at Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles. The show will videotaped and transmitted live via satellite to 38 movie theaters in the U.S. and Canada.

That Tom Petty simulcast was in 2002. The Prince simulcast was March of 2004.

~ Not sure what you're going after regarding "copied" based on your examples.
If you're referring to songs being "covered", i'm guessing Chuck Berry, The Beatles & Dylan would be serious contenders.

...On the "genius" question, once again the question involved being an "innovator".

Nice try anyway. wink

He used it in the song Long Hot Summer Nights.
Not sure when the term was initially used in a song.

Electric Ladyland is a stellar album.
The Rainy Day, Dream Away/1983... (A Merman I Should Turn to Be)/Moon, Turn the Tides...Gently Gently Away/Still Raining, Still Dreaming sequence is one of my favorite parts of the album.

I'm getting a little tired of these Prince v. Hendrix things... Yes, Hendrix helped create rock guitar, but then so did Clapton and I don't remember a P v. EC comparison recently... Where Hendrix experimented with the effects possible with a guitar, P then transferred these to his drum machine for goodness sakes!

Yes P has "borrowed" other peoples stuff from time to time but has made it his own. And he has mixed so many different styles to create that sound that is unmistakably his.
Hendrix borrowed from the music of his time and made it his own but didn't really step off the blues/rock path. I can't imagine Hendrix singing When We're Dancing Close And Slow or Kiss for example... and actually his singing isn't a plus point anyway, is it?

And as for the guitar playing... Yes Hendrix was an amazing innovator on the guitar but again didn't stray off the beaten path... apart from using his teeth (i'm still doubtful of this one!) and setting it on fire (wow! - Fender's cost quite a lot back then too u know)
Although it has been stated on here before that Prince plays the same style to everything... Clapton stated in an interview once that all his solos are the blues... and he is, apparently, God on guitar! ... so what's wrong if Prince does the same? But P's funky rhythm stuff is far far removed from the end solo of Let's Go Crazy... Just My Imagination and Rave at the Trojan Horse in '88 aren't exactly the Purple Rain solo re-hashed are they?

So who is the most innovative? Hendrix on guitar... P on bringing everything to the mix (and dishing it out for nigh on 30 years)... If Hendrix hadn't passed so early would he still be revered? Hmmm, I see a new thread lurking!!
We ain't from Hollywood, so you know it's all good

Hendrix...there will be no one before him or after him . He's dead and is still very much alive from generation to generation. Prince's legacy will never top Jimi's.

And even as a fan I'm being honest.

The songs you listed are amazing, nobody's doubting P's abilities, but like blackguitaristz already said, it's not who you think is better or who you prefer; it's who is more of an innovator, and when it comes to guitar; it's hendrix. Think of it this way, when the first Star Wars came out in 77; that movie definitely became an innovator as far as special effects are concerned. Decades later, you still see the influence of star wars in almost all movies. they've become spectacles, dazzling special effects. And you know what, the effects in movies now are WAY BETTER than the ones the original Star Wars had in 77, but Star Wars is still the INNOVATOR because it was the creator of this new concept or w/e u wanna call it. Basically, even if Prince has surpassed Hendrix, can play better than him, more styles, more faster or w/e, that doesn't change the fact that Hendrix was an innovator that changed the face of how the guitar is looked at as an instrument which is something P has not and will not ever do.

shit yeah. my point exactly.

HELL NO...Jimi is the greatest guitarist(so far)but Prince is a complete musical badass...overall more innovative than Jimi...but if the topic is about just guitars ,well...that would be close...Prince plays all styles
on guitars ...Jimi is just probably a sharper player on the few style he is known for...Prince more diverse,Jimi 'sharper" he is just known for guitars.
Prince,guitars & then some...

Um, no.
I prefer Prince as an artist.
But Jimi is way more important in the landscape of music today than Prince is. Sorry. Prince hasn't changed music history the way Jimi did and has not influenced nearly as many musicians as he has.

Prince is more talented... but Jimi is by far the bigger innovator. FACT.

I am a Prince lover fan but as a guitar player and a music teacher i have to agree on this whith you.Ask a student to play Jimi stuff in a decent and corect way and they find it very hard and takes a long time to them to achive the goal.cant say the same about Princes guitar style, not saing its realy ease to play a Prince song but its a fact, its easear than Jimi stuff.not wanna say that always the harder is better but we are speking about 2 guitar players so we are speking about guitar and people belive me when i say,you cant mess whith Jimi,he just changed the hole aprouch on the instrument,he is by far the moust influent guitar player of all time.If you are a reader of guitar magazines you ll always get famous guitar players giving credit of a genius to Jimi style and talking theirs Jimis influences. But 2 be onest, you find people that dig Prince style on the guitar such as Eric Clapton that regulary cites Prince as one of his favorite players,or a modern guitar player such ass Joe Satriani that indicated SOTT one of his favorites albuns in a 10 records choice.
Me myself prefer Princes sound, but i stick whit Jimi as a guitar player and inovator.
Just to end this in 1994 Guitar World had an interwiw whith Prince and they asked him:
-You ve often been compared to Jimi Hendrix. How do you feel about that?
and Prince goes:
People make the world go round.
GW:So many people think of the guitar as a phallic symbol.Do you?
P:People make the world go round.

To be clear, I looked up the definition of "innovator", and it said "one who innovates". So I went to "innovate" and got "to begin or introduce something new".
In that case, it's JIMI. nod

To me, Prince is a hybrid of Jimi, James & Richard. cool

Doesn't ANYBODY give ANY credit to Chuck Berry?
There would be NO Jimi without Chuck.
No Chuck = No Jimi = No Prince

If u really want to get down with this, let's take it to where it truly belongs; Robert Johnson. Otherwise man, good luck in trying to rehash some dead ass shit on this thread. If u REALLY want something that's not so obviously one sided because of hate and denial over a Hendrix influence, start this topic over in the Non Prince Music forum and see what time it is. Otherwise,....

That was the 1985 Rolling Stone magazine interview where he said that. I believe that was his "F.U." to the critics, like in a 1985 Cream magazine I own, that where labeling him a Jimi Hendrix "impersonator." And while he was also influenced by Carlos Santana's guitar playing, the Jimi Hendrix influence was obvious.
