Prince is like Bruce Lee,master of ALL styles,bounded by none...he does it all ,but can not be classified in any one genre.

Thats why he is called a "MUSICAL GENIUS" & Jimi just a great guitarist.

Watching these clips makes me realize how underrated Prince truly is on guitar. P has truly evolved into a great guitarist even if he isn't as revolutionary as Hendrix. P's style is flawless, clean and damn clever. His complex musical mind is always on display. He can adapt to any style (Hendrix, Benson, funk, jazz, rock) it's amazing. Also, P is one of the best rythmn guitarists of all time.

Prince is very much underrated on guitar. I totally agree with that. I always play Prince's version of Jimi's "Red House" on the Rave DVD and Prince's "The Ride" on the Prince Live DVD, "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" on the Sign O' The Times DVD and the "Take Me With U" music video on the Purple Rain DVD to my friends who are Jimi fans and don't know anything about Prince as a guitarist. And yes, I have all the Prince cd's too, I prefer to watch Prince play. I wish Prince would release more DVD's. It's too bad there's no Prince stuff on youtube anymore. All I could find is this: It's "Purple Rain" with no sound.
Watching these Jimi clips should also make you realize how similar Prince's guitar playing is to Jimi's and how Jimi played in different styles too. From funky guitar, to straight out blues, to hard rock, to soft ballads, to acoustic. He didn't just play blues or just hard rock.

TO ME, Prince is the innovator. I've listened to alot of Hendrix's work and there's not much that interests me, alot of it is rather bland. Prince's material has infulenced my own work a fair bit.

amen.... I think Prince likes to be compared to Jimi, who the hell wouldn't. Jimi's music came from.... good lord, there is no telling where his music came from. No one could compose like he could, no one to this day has been as original and still be good at it.

Remember... Prince imitates Jimi, Jimi never would have to imitate Prince.

But see THAT'S the very element many in this forum don't see. Or want to see. I touched on this very early on in the thread. When I stated that many who love P as a guitarist HATED Hendrix, I said that coming from the place that I think they resent Hendrix because they know P gets compared to him so much. Like they think somehow Hendrix cast a shadow over Prince or that he steals some of Prince's thunder. When in reality, so much of P being compared to Jimi is by P's OWN doing. P wants to be compared to Hendrix. He always has. And that's obvious. Just like P has shown his love for James Brown in his music and dancing and how he runs his band on stage. All of which is pure James Brown. But many haven't seen any footage on James in a live setting so they don't have a clue of what I'm refering to. And that's all cool. This is coming from a cat who has grew up on Prince, seen P when he was not a superstar. I've witness P go from a cult artist that the mainstream audience thought was weird, gay and thought that his music just flat out stunk. I was there through all of that. I seen him go from that to blowing up with Purple Rain and everything else after that. He has influenced me BIGTIME as a guitarist and a musician and songwriter, in general. No one on here has more love for Prince as an artist than I do. But that doesn't blind me from things either. One of the main reasons I dug P in the first place was because he was doing a Hendrix type thing when he played rock. It was obvious that P has much love for Hendrix, like Funkadelic and The Isley Brothers. He showed it, musically and visually. Purple Rain, the album, is basically a tribute to Hendrix. I won't even go into P's clothing and his mannerisms while playing the guitar. That's all Hendrix. He's done that his whole career. That's another reason why he's been compared to Jimi. And Prince knows that. All of that was by P's own doing. This whole thread has been twisted up with people comparing him to Hendrix as a guitarist and to Hendrix as an artist. Two different things. As much as I dig P as a guitarist and always have, P is not an innovator as a guitarist. Hendrix was. That's just my opinion.

Prince = 1 Jimi + 1 Little Richard + 1 James Brown

With out any one one of the Three, there would be NO Prince. Prince stole some of his persona from Jimi and Richard, along with their fashion sense. You can also see where Prince got his ruffled shirts from, Jimi. Prince wears make-up like Little Richard. Prince stole the Funk from James. I'ts all good, because it's a great combination.

That was the 1985 Rolling Stone magazine interview where he said that. I believe that was his "F.U." to the critics, like in a 1985 Cream magazine I own, that where labeling him a Jimi Hendrix "impersonator." And while he was also influenced by Carlos Santana's guitar playing, the Jimi Hendrix influence was obvious.

Tell it Brutha B! I remember there was a time (80-82) when P was looked upon as the Anti-Christ. Black dudes couldn't stand him (even if they secretly liked his music) and White dudes??..Forget about it!! You can imagine all the names I used to hear them call him. I'd mention he was a rippin' guitarist and they didn't want to hear it. They said he looked like a woman..but at the same time they were into glam metal(....???!!)

P definetly took a page from the Jimi book (especially and 84 and even in 06/07) and made it his own thing. I've said it before but I remember hearing the outro feedback solo in "Private Joy" and saying "Jimi At Monterey". Even the stripped down bass/drums/wah guitar version of "Witness" and "The Undertaker" have "Gypsies" written all over it.

oh, I was crucified 4 liking P as a teen. I liked him way b-4 P-rain, and no one knew what the hell I was listening too. Then P-rain came, and EVERYONE knew him then. When everyone knows you, when you hit the top fast, people either love you or hate you. So I rode the tide of being trashed or praised for liking P at that time. I really didn't give a damn. It was the 80's, and no matter what anyone says, he was the only good thing in it musically.

Jimi couldn't imitate Prince. This thread has drawn P comparisons to JB, Little Richard, Jimi and you can throw in Sly and Carlos while still missing the mark. His influences are also Joni, some Beatles, 70's rock, 80's New Wave, Miles, Weather Report and many more. But you add all this up and you still have a complex and brilliant musician who has created his own sound that has transformed modern music. Can you imagine contemporary music without Prince's musical mannerisms (keyboard horns, staccato guitar,etc.), overtly sexual themes and iconography. And we haven't even begun to talk about his work outside of his own catalog (Time, Sheila, Sinead, Bangles, etc.) and his deep well of brilliant music that has not even been officially released.

Try comparing Jimi to P as a songwriter, composer, producer. Compare Jimi to P after removing the guitar. P is colorful on the keyboards and truly original behind the drumkit.

Prince could cover any Jimi song but could you see him do Housequake?

The songs you listed are amazing, nobody's doubting P's abilities, but like blackguitaristz already said, it's not who you think is better or who you prefer; it's who is more of an innovator, and when it comes to guitar; it's hendrix. Think of it this way, when the first Star Wars came out in 77; that movie definitely became an innovator as far as special effects are concerned. Decades later, you still see the influence of star wars in almost all movies. they've become spectacles, dazzling special effects. And you know what, the effects in movies now are WAY BETTER than the ones the original Star Wars had in 77, but Star Wars is still the INNOVATOR because it was the creator of this new concept or w/e u wanna call it. Basically, even if Prince has surpassed Hendrix, can play better than him, more styles, more faster or w/e, that doesn't change the fact that Hendrix was an innovator that changed the face of how the guitar is looked at as an instrument which is something P has not and will not ever do.
