Could Jimi do "Housequake?" Prince probably wouldn't find it a stretch, since he stole Jimi's "Little Miss Lover" beat for "Tick, Tick Bang..."
And, "LML" was funnnnnky... I was just about to reference Prince's "Witness" as a big ol' tribute to Jimi.

And, "LML" was funnnnnky... I was just about to reference Prince's "Witness" as a big ol' tribute to Jimi. I once saw Prince dance across the stage, slide into the chair of his piano, play a minute of brilliant jazz chords, jump on top and catch his guitar where he played an orgasmic solo that was finished by him jumping off the piano and landing on the stage with four inch heels where he proceeded to do the splits, dangle the mic stand and sing some amazing falsetto runs. He played a three hour concert with encores and later showed up at a niteclub where he played multiple instruments, rare compositions and reworked classics. Could Jimi top that!?

Never saw Jimi do the splits. And, no one is taking anything away from Prince by saying he's less than an innovator than Hendrix. Can't they both be great? Time played a major role in who influenced whom. How about that?

jdcxc said: hollywooddove said: amen.... I think Prince likes to be compared to Jimi, who the hell wouldn't. Jimi's music came from.... good lord, there is no telling where his music came from. No one could compose like he could, no one to this day has been as original and still be good at it. Remember... Prince imitates Jimi, Jimi never would have to imitate Prince. Jimi couldn't imitate Prince. This thread has drawn P comparisons to JB, Little Richard, Jimi and you can throw in Sly and Carlos while still missing the mark. His influences are also Joni, some Beatles, 70's rock, 80's New Wave, Miles, Weather Report and many more. But you add all this up and you still have a complex and brilliant musician who has created his own sound that has transformed modern music. Can you imagine contemporary music without Prince's musical mannerisms (keyboard horns, staccato guitar, etc.), overtly sexual themes and iconography. And we haven't even begun to talk about his work outside of his own catalog (Time, Sheila, Sinead, Bangles, etc.) and his deep well of brilliant music that has not even been officially released. Try comparing Jimi to P as a songwriter, composer, producer. Compare Jimi to P after removing the guitar. P is colorful on the keyboards and truly original behind the drumkit. Prince could cover any Jimi song but could you see him do Housequake? PREACH ...imagine Jimi doing "if i was your girlfrieand" ,"Adore","Batdance""cream"....yet Prince can do any of his shit.

That was the 1985 Rolling Stone magazine interview where he said that. I believe that was his "F.U." to the critics, like in a 1985 Cream magazine I own, that where labeling him a Jimi Hendrix "impersonator." And while he was also influenced by Carlos Santana's guitar playing, the Jimi Hendrix influence was obvious. It's funny I've owned "Axis" and "Graffiti Bridge" for YEARS, but I never really started listening to "Axis" until lately. All of a sudden, I couldn't believe it. There was the exact beat from "Tick Tick Bang" Damn!! Only took me ten or 15 years to catch that. I kept thinking the Jimi song should be mixed into "Tick Tick Bang"

Both are great!
But Prince is way better! Jimi Hendrix played sloppy. He wasnt as crisp as Prince is. No excuses, sloppy is sloppy and there is allot of live performances I have heard where Jimi was real sloppy. If I tried in 25+ years of listening to Prince play guitar that he was ever sloppy and wasnt crisp/tight with his playing. But again we are talking about 1.a 1.b Both are GREAT!

I appreciate your opinion. You find degrees sloppiness all over the blues, though. Even in the same solo, you can find extremes of both.

Prince is a tight guitar player who has found some interesting ways to mask his sloppiness or wrong notes. Often he'll keep playing the figure on before transitioning (often through a bend) to something else. [Edited 5/31/08 7:41am]

How about somebody stepping up to the plate, and in an intelligent fact-based manner, list the innovations (with strict adherence to the meaning of the word) that Prince has initiated.

I've heard it referred to as the "blur technique" combined with so many effects that you can't tell what's actually being played. Here's some Space-Blues that has yet to be touched... ...Voodoo Chile I will give BW the argument that many of the live Hendrix albums (outside of Woodstock, Monterey Pop, Band of Gypsys and possibly one or two others) shouldn't have seen the light of day. However the times I saw him live, he was on the money. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn.
