IMO, it's wrong to state it as a fact that it is Hendrix who's the true innovator and that it's sad that others don't think so. It doesn't have anything to do with whom you think is the better musician. You don't have to dislike Jimi to be of the opinion that it's Prince. I mean this all depends on what you're thinking of. If it's only the music or other areas as well. The business side of things for example. The other things that don't have to do with the music itself. Is Hendrix the "winner" there as well?

Jimi lived pretty well, toward the end. theAudience once posted an article detailing how he was living, and how he was constantly being harrassed by the cops and getting pulled over. He had just as many disagreements with his label as any other artist back then. Not sure what you mean by innovative in business -- like handing out CDs at shows and having that count toward sales?

What is innovation anyway? I'm no music historian but, is my opinion that neither of these legendary musicians created their "innovations" in a vacuum and that they each owe an incredible debt of gratitude to their predecessors. Prince's influences (Sly, Jimi, James, Joni, Santana, etc.) have been discussed so much on this board that many here would have you believe that he has never had a musical vision of his own , but is simply a regurgitator of others' styles. I think that it is equally ludicrous to assume that Jimi developed his "innovations" without being influenced by others and that he just "came up with something new." It is fairly well documented that Buddy Guy was incorporating many of Jimi's trademark innovations, both sonically and in showmanship, into his live act as early as the early 1960's. You do not hear them on Buddy's studio recordings because his record contract was with Chess Records and Leonard Chess dismissed Buddy's stage show as "noise." (That is until Hendrix, Clapton, etc. began to make money with that noise.) Now, does that detract from Jimi's legacy or influence? Not to me. He took what Buddy was doing, expanded on it, and brought it to an entirely different audience. Hey, Buddy was influenced by Guitar Slim and B.B. King...who were influenced by Muddy Waters...who was influenced by Robert Johnson...who was influenced by Son House.... So, I feel no need to choose, I guess. Everyone is influenced by someone. They were both incredibly influential musicians who brought different spheres of influence to the game...and both their influences are still felt today.

This had the potential to be a fascinating debate on multiple levels. I was hoping to see discussion of their respective technical wizadry, their songbook, and their impact on the era in which they lived.
I can't really say much about the technical side of what these guys do, but I prefer Hendrix overall on guitar. If someone can break down the technique between these two men, please post/orgnote me so I/other orgers can understand the way these guys played guitar. They are very similar, but different in so many ways. In regards to their song catalog, this is a tough one. Hendrix had one of the most legendary runs in music history with 3 classics back to back to back ( Are you Experienced, Axis, Electric Ladyland). Discounting the Beatles, this is a very impressive feat. Critical and commercially acclaimed and numerous hits from each album. Prince best three album arc of commercial and critical success would possibly be 1999, Purple Rain, and maybe Around The World in A Day. I chose these three since they represent the Prince Golden era/decade of 1978-1988. In regards to the era in which each man dominated, Hendrix had a far more difficult playing field to put his music against. Look at some of his contemporaries: Eric Clapton, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Bob Dylan, Motown. Even Elvis still had some juice left at that time. It was like the perfect storm of musicians that all had their commercial and critical acclaim from 1964/Beatles intro to 1970/Hendrix death. For his music to be relevant 40 years after its intro is a testament to his genius. He had the soul of a bluesman and Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters, and John Lee Hooker were forbearers to what Hendrix incorporated into his sound. Prince is a byproduct of Hendrix. Prince's innovations are well known and his brand of funk was just a branch of what James Brown, P Funk and others did decades earlier. Prince is an innovator, but for the era in which he dominated (IMO). He is an all time great but his innovation is hampered bythe fact that his era of music was not as strong as the Hendrix era of music. Prince's main rivals in music were Madonna and MJ, and an argument could be made by the fans of either one of those artists that they were bigger innovators to the era of music (video) than Prince was. But keeping to the heart of this thread, Prince is an innovator, albeit in a diluted era of music. There is nothing wrong with liking one over the other, but if I had to choose, Jimi wins, regardless of just being a "guitar player". The man was a cultural icon and he was a different cat altogether. Black musicians weren't supposed to look like Hendrix and play like Hendrix back in the day. Prince gets alot of respect for me for what he did with funk, rock, pop, and soul during the 1980's, but his 1990's era was him playing "follow the leader". Hendrix life was ultimately cut short and everything that may/could have happened musically will always be the great "what if" in music history. Hendrix innovation, through death, is intact due to the classic albums he released in his commetcial/critical peak. "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

ThreadBare said: This question is like a music history thing. Prince is a student of Hendrix's. Always has been. And, he's still appropriating Jimi's stuff to this day.
1) Hendrix was more than an innovative guitarist who changed the face of rock guitar. He, too, dabbled in various styles on his records -- and his soul turn, toward the end of his days, would have been a treat to watch evolve. But what he did in rock music alone is quite amazing. The tons of tribute albums to him that cycle through every few years is a testament to his influence. You get all these wide-ranging acts whose guitarists play, and you see how broadly this man's style has been internalized and felt. "Habibi" was his take on Hendrix's "Machine Gun," for instance. And, in recent years, with the Strat playing, the change in styles and the face-making, Prince has been copying Hendrix HARD. "Fury" is nothing but a Hendrix song, and Prince's SNL performance and the video for it were obvious, in that regard. As Prince's amazing mobility onstage has been stymied by hip issues over the years, he's modified his stage routine to include elements of Jimi's moves, as well as Ike & Tina-style choreography. 2) Hendrix was a multi-instrumentalist, too. Folks see him and think guitar. But much has been written about his work on bass, piano and drums during sessions. He played them well enough to birth his song concept and to produce the sorts of recordings -- particularly with Electric Ladyland -- that just hadn't been done so masterfully. A lot of the studio wizardry we hear on P's stuff has its roots in Jimi's work. The fact that people continually raise the question of someone who's been doing his thing for 3 decades versus someone whose solo career was but one-tenth as long should be a clear indicator of just how big Hendrix was in music. Very good post. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Since I don't have the time at the moment to go into serious detail, here's my Reader's Digest version.
In terms of expanding the musical pallet for guitar, studio recording, cross-pollinating genres and being a trend setter in terms of dressing like a Rock Star, it's Jimi Hendrix hands down. Prince became a beneficiary of all of those things. I see Prince as more of a master-assimilator than an innovator. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. But I'm sure if Jimi was alive today, Jimi and P definetly would have had some jams recorded at Paisley. Mannn... that would be so koo-ool.... Imgine Prince & Jimi on stage jamming, then at the end, Jimi lights his guitar on fire & then Prince comes over & puts it out with his ejaculator-guitar.
