From what I see, Hendrix was more original than Prince. So I think he had more of an ability to even BE innovative than Prince had.
And in addition to that, I hear way more Hendrix influence in music than I do Prince influence. Hell, Prince was influenced by Jimi. Ha! [Edited 5/25/08 12:23pm]

Hendrix was an amazing guitar player but when it comes to being more innovative i would have to go with my man Prince on that one.

To be clear, I looked up the definition of "innovator", and it said "one who innovates". So I went to "innovate" and got "to begin or introduce something new".
In that case, it's JIMI. To me, Prince is a hybrid of Jimi, James & Richard. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

It's not about who's better but about who's more of an innovator. IMO, that's a tricky question My first thought would be Jimi, but again, it's debatable. When it comes to the other stuff besides the music I'd definitely say Prince. But also musically... [Edited 5/25/08 15:07pm]

Guitar- Of course, Jimi.
But as a musician, there has never been a more complete and complex talent in pop music history than Prince. Technologically, he single handidly brought the elimination of the 70's era large bands (EWF, Ohio Players, etc.) with his one man band studio wizardry. He brought on the era of the producer. He developed a musical style that incorporated a unique mix of multiple genres. His music is immediately recognizable. As a composer and multi-instrumentalist he is without peer. His durability, work ethic and live presence are legendary. He can turn out rockers, groove lovers, songwriters, jazz purists on the same album. He has been daring, unconventional, rule defying, quirky, gender and race challenging and artzy while bringing those qualities into the mainstream. And I've just gotten started... Name me a more complex artist.

I don't really know anything about Jimi, I never heard he was great until after he was dead, because whe I was coming up he was just known as a drugged out hippie. So I'll say Prince.

Jimi was the innovator on the electric guitar and Prince learned from Jimi (and Joni Mitchell on acoustic guitar, Carlos Santana's Latin-tinged guitar playing, and Larry Graham on bass, obviously). Goodnight, sweet Prince.

This perhaps could be a bait thread. The only reason I say that is because this question has been beaten to death so much that the word "death" now only has the letters "th" to it The "dea" has been whipped completly off. Now to give the orger who did this thread the benifit of the doubt,....Most folks in this forum will pick Prince. If u were to ask this same question over in the Non Music forum which deals with other artists, then I say 99% of the folks there will pick Hendrix. I'm saying that to say this; people dig who they dig. Period. There is no justifying it. That said, My opinion as to who is more of an innovator. On guitar? Hendrix, without question. I believe in my heart that Prince himself would tell u that. There are many people who loves Prince as a guitarist who HATES Hendrix. That's the strangest thing to me, but whatever. I myself love Prince as a guitarist. He's been a huge influence on me as a guitarist. More so than Hendrix? Fuck no. But I still dig Prince. Their entirely two different cats. Just like Dez, Jesse and Prince all have been influenced by Hendrix yet Dez, Jesse and Prince's styles are all different from each other. Hendrix alone, changed the electric guitar. He opened up a whole new mindset of how the guitar can sound, how it can be played...what is possible on the guitar. All of those things Hendrix introduced. I know this is the Prince forum so I don't expect many on here to agree with me and that's cool. That's simply what I believe. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I'd say both.
Jimi took guitar playing to a whole new level. He was the first widely accepted african-american guitarist to step into that level of rock and roll and equalize and surupass some of the so-called greats in that arena. Prince is obviously influenced by Jimi, I believe he's made references to Jimi all along, most recently in Chelsea Rodgers. Prince has also been invovative in his use of the guitar using it to underscore the other instruments, melodies and lyrics in a very powerfull way--the Just My Imagination guitar solo is an excellent example. The guitar playing becomes the lyrics to the song not the melody. Prince kinda makes his sing, Jimi's guitar talked.
