I bought "Soft and Wet" when it came out, and most of the singles after that, but the song that got me hooked was "Automatic".

I remember listening to that through headphones while at work one day, and upon hearing all the stuff going on underneath the song, I said, "Shit! This guy is the black Springsteen!"

Of course, no one else could hear what I was hearing, so I got some funny looks.

YAY! That song gets slammed on here but I love it, especially the extended version!

It was the release of Alphabet street that made me hooked, but it was Kiss that first got me interested!

Ottensen

It was the end of the 70's, and I was a wee little one, maybe 8 or 9. His 2nd record was out then and my local r&b station used to play "Still Waiting" daily. I had a crush on the cutest boy of my 2nd/3rd grade class, and I used to listen to that song everyday after school munching on Chips A'hoy cookies... hoping that he would give me the coolest of all the Valentines Day cards in our class. I remember the week before Valentine's day, I'd come home and listen to "Still Waiting" drowing my troubles in a big glass of Sunny Delite, I was 8 years old and thought I was "Still Waiting" for that love to come around falloff falloff falloff

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

My first memory of Prince is seeing the video for When Doves Cry on Top of The Pops and thinking he was really cool.
Kiss, Girls and Boys and Sign "O" the Times piqued my interest when they came out as singles. Then Housequake really grabbed my attention when it was played on the radio in the run up to the release of the Sign album.

But it was If I was Your Girlfriend that really did it for me. It sounded so different when I heard it played on the radio.

Remember when they used to play new Prince singles on the radio before they came out? I think the last time that happened was Musicology.

Eh...it's such a generic choice...but Purple Rain.

I'd never heard anything like it at the time and it changed the way I felt about music.
