Having no clue what it was going to be like I put it on at full volume and that deep voice near made me pee my pants lol
But seriously once I listened to it a few times I began to really enjoy it.....and I quite frankly dont give a damn what anyone else says.
I like what I like....Im not asking anyone else to like the same thing as me because that would be boring...and I hope no one expects me or anyone else to agree with them just because they dont like something
Lets enjoy our diversity people...Im sure Prince does wink

Music - so-so...has a consistent sound from beginning to end but generally safe and conservative...nothing groundbreaking aurally. This album really confirmed to me that Prince totally stopped trying in the studio.

Lyrics - ranges from sweet and sugary to racist and evil then oddly uplifting... All over the place. tries to be a "concept" album but the "concept" is ultimately offensive and disappointing considering who its comiing from. Was this album a strange phase in prince's life or was this the first time the "real" Prince showed us what is really going on in his head?

If you like this thing trc, then you probably think his 90's output was "BRILLIANT" and cutting edge.

....and good for you!

nuff said

Kinda the opposite.

I rarely listen to any of Prince's 90s stuff but I love TRC because it was the first time since '88 that it sounded like he meant and felt what he was doing.

I also love the organic sound of the thing. I'm not religious so not too fussed by the lyrics, vader voice not really an issue, wedding feast makes me laugh (as it did him if you listen at the end)

i tottaly agree with you there. i just mentioned to someone no long ago the same line. i was just complainin about how much i disliked Planet Earth..

i also like to say Chocolate Invasion was great but its a shame it was not a commercial release.

Yep! Chocolate Invasion is a better offering than the last trio!

A fantastic album imo one of his last perfect albums.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

Of course it may not be up with some of his best works, but if you look at it, when prince has been one of the few artists to last so long in the music biz, how many more melodies can you really come up with? If you pay attention to most of his 90's music after "Symbol" the melodies began to be repititive it would a solo in one song, and the hook, the chorus, or the bridge in the next song...And when you begin to think about it? Should prince have to try anymore? He's really not trying to sell records majorly. He just wants to make music, and even if he was trying to sell records on a large scale, he has explained to us he has had trouble in his songs, take "Don't play me" for instance. Released in 97-98 (the time where his music was beginning to be described as dull, says "my only competition is well me in the past" right he just let us know that what his fans wanna see in him as a musician they will not, for what reason? WHO KNOWS!?!??!

I think we need a few more open-minded people on this site because apparently we have a lot of conservative fans that completely reject what they aren't used to in hearing music.

Respectfully, I totally disagree with that last part, I think that the majority of us that find TRC dumb stale have a much deeper appreciation of all kinds of music and I BET have a much broader taste in music, and have heard everything in TRC, and done much better.
A lot of us became Prince fans BECAUSE his music was not CONSERVATIVE it WAS innovative and DARING once upon a time.
In the 90's when his music was becoming stale and uninspired, there were other cats coming up that took up his daring spirit, like Bjork, and Radiohead,... shit nothing on my iPod is conservative.

Notice I didn’t say “bad”, I said “dumb and stale.” Just my opinion.

Just trying to find out what these prince fans are feeling....
but what I meant by conservative was more along the lines of not accepting this new "brand" of music prince was expirimenting with, not particularly you violet blues but there are some orgers that are this way and refusing to like and bash recent prince music on the sole means of it "not being like it used to". which would bring up the conservative terms in the definiton of not open to change or new things....But i apologize for the misunderstanding!!!

I could explain it, but you seem to be too dense to grasp even what you yourself wrote. You wrote "so called Prince fans that said Rainbow Children was a horrible album." Still with me? That would imply that those of us who are in the signficant majority are not really Prince fans because we have a different opinion than you about that misguided, racist, misogynistic, piece of shit excuse for a record. Then again, there are imbeciles on this site who'd rank Wedding Feast right up there with When Doves Cry.

And who the hell are you to define what it means to be a fan? Eejit.

really calm down readin to much into sumthing no body else noticed and not the big of a deal might i add? who cares you are defending the fact of something that is completely off topic.....nothing that has to do with the gist of the entire thread.....and if your that offended by it you dont have to reply to the thread.....and yes i said those "so called prince fans" i can understand that you have your opinion about the album but here again if you read my previous post and i will say again if you're saying prince has lost his touch or he isn't as good as he used to based on the quality that you dislike of one or more albums then that jus seems wrong to me....then since the album was released in 2002 or watever and u make that judgment it obligates you to say that about prince when he releases anything after the rainbow children...if you say he lost his touch that means you dislike every prince album after that....plus live shows plus concerts etc. you may not like the album thats fine with me but this thread was for those who agree with me get it?? got it!!!

and your basically contradicting yourself when you make your comment about the album and then go on to say there are inbecils who would rank wedding feast up there with when doves cry??? you basically jus created a double standard bcuz that means if there is somebdy that ranks WF with WDC then it automatically labels them as an imbecil?? and that gives them a false label for having their own opinion?? you might wanna check yaself again sir or madame>>>>>

You'd likely lose that bet.... and as good as they are, Bjork and Radiohead don't have that daring spirit Prince used to have. Prince was a force of nature. Now, I like their current work more than I like his but that's just my opinion. If I didn't have his old work to compare it to I might enjoy his new music more (not Planet Earth though wink ).

It's funny how numerous people here keep saying Prince is doing something that's been done before, but better. A Prince album always incorporates elements that have been used before. Just like with 1999, Purple Rain, Lovesexy, SOTT and Parade the innovation is how he brings his influences together. TRC like those albums is pure Prince-- you may not like where he was coming from at the time but it was direct from Planet Prince. If it doesn't work for you, fine. Say that, but don't say it's been done better because Prince is the only one that could do it and he hadn't to that point.

Point taken
but to me, again its just a rehash of everything he had already done and done much much better.

but youre right about the influences.
You know its cool to hear other peoples opinions, it makes me go back and take another listen and see if i can find what others hear and are passionate about.

Like Duke Ellington said, "If it sounds good, then it is good!" fuck what anybody say right?

I just tried so hard, I bought a copy for $8 NZ and tried to listen to it. Its just not a good album, its all drivel and the messages of the songs are distatseful (I am sure many gay fans would agree with me). The Rainbow children is ok and I like 1plus 1plus1 = 3.
17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince
