Nothing Compares 2 U - could have been a huge hit

I remember in late 1993 thinking that if Prince released Nothing Compares 2 U from The Hits as a Christmas single in the UK, he would have had a guaranteed No. 1 - instead WB re-released Controversy (which did much better than I expected, reaching No. 5). At least TMBGITW a few months later got to No. 1, but I still think both WB and Prince missed out on such a great opportunity.

Such a shame...

maybe in the UK, but in the US it would have appeared as if he was riding the success of another artist's hit single, and that's just not prince IMO. Besides, prince enjoys being recognized as a composer and performer, and received many accolades for his writing of 'NC2U'.

That explains why he never performed the song or released it 'till someone else made a hit of it.

Do I detect an air of sarcasm in your comment, joeycoco?

I may get in trouble for this, but I must say that the live version of this song with Rosie did nothing for me. I actually hold the one sang by the family closer to my heart! That was one of the jams of the year when it was out. Their version was even better than Prince's, in my humble opinion. But then again some would say I have a weird taste in music...

that live Version was Loud&just there for me as well.Prince always trying too Battle whatever goes too Number 1 really had Bull Horns on top of His Head for Sinead O'Conner for reaching Number 1.as for The Family's Version"ST Paul Vocally Sounded Good but Prince lost His Mind when He got Clare Fischer on the Orchestration.Strings&things all over the place for me&my ears.I thought "River Run Dry" was the Best Slow Cut on that Album along with "Screams of Passion" IMHO.anyway Sinead added Emotion too the Song&Video for me.I wasn't fully keen on Her Vocal Presentation of the song Per Se but the overall Feel&Vibe that She Brought clearly made it Her Song for Me.

Ya know, every time I think of Sinead O'Connor, I can't help but think of Saturday Night Live when "Frank Sinatra" (played by Phil Hartman) had some type of round table and he kept calling her names like "baldy" and such!! It is truly a classicand funny as hell!!! (well, hell ain't funny)...I forgot the name of the woman who played Sinead, but she played her to the hilt and of course, she was a regular.
