Z Cult Question/ Are People In This Forum More Interested...

Are people in this forum more interested in Prince, the artist i.e., musician, songwriter, performer? Or Prince the sex symbol? The women he has dated, his body, face, etc.?

This forum is a travesty.

I do realize there's not much to go on as far as Prince's artistic output nowadays, and his actions over the past year are highly questionable; but he has provided enough mentionables for discussion to be built upon besides the overly saturated post a picture or "Prince In _____" threads. Such topics are tolerable when done in moderation -- it's when they start to account for the majority of a days or so discussion that it becomes complete overkill IMO.

It just boggles me that we're apart of a community of an artists who's musical track record alone extends far beyond it's years given, yet there can't seemingly be anything of interest worth talking about (with the few exceptions of course).

Men see Prince as a musician, songwriter, and performer.

Women see Prince as a musician, songwriter, performer AND Sex symbol.

That's why you have men complaining about the sex symbol threads razz .. LOL!

I lie awake nights wondering what he had for lunch. lol

Seriously though, you make a lot of good points. I think the nonsense threads keep the more mature posters away. I've all but stopped reading or posting in this forum and so have a lot of others. The key word you used is moderation. It's okay to kid around once in awhile or show some admiration of his looks, (he's cute, I've noticed, ~sigh~) but I'm more interested in Prince as a kick ass musician/songwriter/performer, so ultimately what he looks like ain't that important to me. Who he sleeps with, even less so.

Another thing is you'd be surprised how many peeps here haven't even heard the majority of his music, haven't seen him live and don't even seem that interested in doing so. So it could be that a lot of those folks are focusing on what little of him they are familiar with.

Finally, like similar forums you have those who feel the need to post on each and every thread even if they have nothing of substance to say and not even attempting to stay on topic. I can't imagine why.

IMO, the off color comments regarding his personal life, anatomy, sexuality or faith are never appropriate but since I don't own or moderate this place I just stick with what interests me and let 'em have the rest.

But for the record I agree with you...with the amazing amount of quality material Prince has produced in the last thirty years it is a travesty that there isn't more focus on his amazing body of work.

I've never had a problem with threads on P being a sex symbol because P is a sex symbol. But he's sooooo much more than that. I dig women who see P's talent as a musician, songwriter and a performer. To simply over look those assets of the man is insulting to Prince, I think. I remember when P was all the rage in 1979 and early 80 as a sex symbol in the black teen magazines. So that's nothing new. I bet money that if P had a choice as to what he rather be seen as; A multi-talented artist or a sex symbol, he would choose the former.

I have seen Prince live and he is amazing... biggrin ! Now if I can only get my husband to witness Prince live... I think I can make him a Prince fan as well.
Prince is an awesome vocalist, that is what initially attracted me to him. His songwriting, wit and remarkable ability to play the guitar and piano/keyboard (which I have witnessed live) just made me a bigger fan. I think his looks are secondary... he has the most beautiful set of brown eyes btw.

He is just a nicely packaged gift. biggrin

I think musician fans like you should have more threads discussing his music here. If it isn't for the fam threads of Prince's Physical appreciation, this forum would be filled with hate threads from Prince Ex-fans. I have seen those too. So I don't mind the fam threads and I think Prince would appreciate them more than the hate threads.

That within itself should be considered a sin!

My mind wasn't even able to fathom thoughts properly when Prince was at his absolute peak, so I dearly appreciate the effort that's been put into preserving his legacy for me, and others who choose, to go back and hear/look upon it. I've yet to attend one his touted concerts, but you better believe when the opportunity presents itself, I'm grabbing onto that chance for dear life.

Your last sentence speaks volumes. If I were to just go by Prince of the now; I'd more than likely be factored into that equation, but how could anyone who considers themselves a fan not want to delve deeper beyond the present exterior?

Different strokes for different folks I guess, but this isn't some fad of the month-year artist who's lackluster presentation (besides just looking good) would warrant this around the clock discussion of tomfoolery.

It's gone kinda down hill lately with lots of newbies making threads about Prince's ass, or replying to every thread about a b-side or unreleased track saying "I've never heard it" - Real inciteful.

This isn't against newbies, everyone is a newbie at one point right - but just general bad etiquette and a lack interest in the music (like they can go hunting for pics of Prince's ass, but can't google up a discography).

I still like the forum, because there's still some great discussion (it's just a little harder to find), and whilst I do find HQ to be a great forum, I also find it a tad dry.

I've been a Prince fan since the early 80's, but not until I got a computer and come to websites have I ever thought about his personal life or marriages or anything. To tell the truth I still don't care, all I really wanna know is when hell be coming this way again. smile

Prince is a phenomenal musician....he bypassed just being a simple artist years ago in my mind. He's the real deal and the total package: extraordinary songwriter, fierce vocalist, jaw-dropping performer, kick-ass instrumentalist, and he's DA PRETTY MAN!, who knows how to rock an ensemble like nobody's bidness lol . Prince IS music for me....they need to put the man's picture next to the word 'music' in the dictionary already nod . Being a Prince fan makes me put all other artists on spotlight and over-analyze them to an extent, which many times leads to disappointment, because artists nowadays are marketed on looks/image first with a tie between personality and musical excellence last. Prince has always wanted his fans to focus on his music, which the majority I believe try to do, but he knows he's not fugly either and uses that to promote his music even more. His looks are just the icing on the cake for me and cake always tastes even better with the frosting....dammit, now I want cake doh!

Brilliant question (never had the "whatever" to ask myself), to which I only have one answer, but the answer is a long one, which I would love to eloborate on, but it would take an age and a century. The whole Prince thing is undefinable, growing up in catholic Ireland in the 80´s, probably on some strange parallel to being black in America. Prince simply defied and still does, every rule, be it music, image or business. (not to mention the sexual thing)

This sums up alot to me, after almost 25 yrs of being a fan, the older I get, the style of work I do, it becomes very clear what P set out to do, and to have that vision at his age, and the god given talent, it is an example and inspiration to all of us, that we should never sit down and let society make ourselves and our lives a zoo....

2 b continued....
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

"True to his status as the last enigma in music, Prince crashed into London this week in a ball of confusion" The Times 2014
