Brilliant question (never had the "whatever" to ask myself), to which I only have one answer, but the answer is a long one, which I would love to eloborate on, but it would take an age and a century. The whole Prince thing is undefinable, growing up in catholic Ireland in the 80´s, probably on some strange parallel to being black in America. Prince simply defied and still does, every rule, be it music, image or business. (not to mention the sexual thing) This sums up alot to me, after almost 25 yrs of being a fan, the older I get, the style of work I do, it becomes very clear what P set out to do, and to have that vision at his age, and the god given talent, it is an example and inspiration to all of us, that we should never sit down and let society make ourselves and our lives a zoo.... 2 b continued.... I've gotten to this thread too late..Maybe..???  I noticed that the threads about 4 example 'what is p's favourite food?' are getting more posts. I *maybe* guilty of posting in a couple of those,but there's not harm in getting a few laughs but a few laughs and some good debate should be an equal balance more often imho.
I dig P in all aspects. Aspects of his talent(s). good or bad. we are human & so is he... "did anyone watch VH1 Soul I think it's called soul deep about how gospel R&B soul has evolved from the early yrs. to now? at 1st it was the performer
then it became the musician (inspiring me 2 learn how 2 play) then it was the songwriter i check out what the brother is wearing and i will admit that there r some outfits he looks mad cool in then there r others with the what the fuck was that?
as the years have gone on, i'm interested in the business side of prince and some of his decisions that he has done... but in the end...it's all about the music man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81 | |

I'm interested in the music and current news. Music covers musicianship, songwriting, and performing. The ORG has become embarrassing, and through no fault of the ORG itself. It is about 7% about Prince's music, and 93% about who he should marry, his clothes, his shoes, bitching about anything (i.e. new music, artwork, him leaving Mayte, his style, how he treats his fans, etc), photo whoring, who's in the clique, which ORGer would U fuck, etc. 4 those of us who care mostly about Prince's music, the "Prince, Music, and More" section isn't even cutting it, because it's cluttered up with most of the examples I give above. I've suggested that the ORG separate the music and "the more", so that there is one section just 4 Prince's music, and another 4 non-musical Prince discussions. Being a Prince fan makes me put all other artists on spotlight and over-analyze them to an extent, which many times leads to disappointment, because artists nowadays are marketed on looks/image first with a tie between personality and musical excellence last. Prince has always wanted his fans to focus on his music, which the majority I believe try to do, but he knows he's not fugly either and uses that to promote his music even more. Seriously though, you make a lot of good points. I think the nonsense threads keep the more mature posters away. I've all but stopped reading or posting in this forum and so have a lot of others. The key word you used is moderation. It's okay to kid around once in awhile or show some admiration of his looks, (he's cute, I've noticed, ~sigh~) but I'm more interested in Prince as a kick ass musician/songwriter/performer, so ultimately what he looks like ain't that important to me. Who he sleeps with, even less so. Another thing is you'd be surprised how many peeps here haven't even heard the majority of his music, haven't seen him live and don't even seem that interested in doing so. So it could be that a lot of those folks are focusing on what little of him they are familiar with. Finally, like similar forums you have those who feel the need to post on each and every thread even if they have nothing of substance to say and not even attempting to stay on topic. I can't imagine why. IMO, the off color comments regarding his personal life, anatomy, sexuality or faith are never appropriate but since I don't own or moderate this place I just stick with what interests me and let 'em have the rest. The music is far and away the most interesting thing to me about Prince - however, I am interested in anything performance-related. And that includes his costumes (because that's what most of the clothing we see is - costumes). That's to be expected, I guess - since I make clothing and actually write about clothing for a living.
In fact, I would go so far as to say that I find the way anyone dresses to be one of the more interesting things about them.  We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves. | |
