Guitar - Demo vs. Planet Earth

Which floats your boat?

I have to say, I've always liked the demo version better. It's...charming...for want of a better word. I love how different it sounds - stripped down, straightforward, no preening or pyrotechnics. And it has a tongue-in-cheek quality that's very appealing. Yeah, it didn't have a lot of guitar for a song called Guitar, but still - there was enough.

I like the PE version...just not like I love this Guitar.

I wrote alot about this.

The original version is so "Prince", in that it even reminds me of the 'Parade' days, with some of the keyboard sounds used.

I liked the effects.

I liked the quirky "Dirty Mind-ish" Bass Guitar line.

But I do also like the re-recorded version.

They're just different renditions, that's all.

Ya know...those are the two albums (Dirty Mind and Parade) that I heard in it, too. No surprise that I like that version - those are two of my favorite albums. cool

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I like them both cause even though they are the same song lyrically, musically they are worlds apart like what Giovanni777 said. Their differences are what I like in the both versions.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

The other day, I drove a winding country road with the sunroof open and Parade blasting. Best moment of my entire week.

Dirty Mind...well...what can I say? That album just starts a party in my pants every time. lol

Sorry to interrupt you guys...

I love the demo version better too. The stripped-down quality makes it a little bouncier and happier. The fun quality of the song, its sense of humor, is better heard on the demo version.

That's it. Carry on, you two. biggrin

Oh yeah. Sorry 'bout that.

Good point! I also liked the flange effect on his voice.

OK, Genesia... Where's the party at? Oh yeah, I remember.

I like the demo version. Its a lot lighter, not very crowded and loud.
The newer one is too...I don't know what...pop?

I'm not a fan of the song at all, but it's at least listenable on Planet Earth.

The flange effect on the voice is another huge plus for the demo. I mean...it's the little tweaky things he does that have been so effective for him (historically).

In a world of overproduction, this could have been a nice alternative...had it been released.

the PE version. it at least, you know, lives up to the title. the song itself in either version is pretty by-the-numbers Prince pop-rock, but the PE version has a driving energy that the demo doesn't have. the demo sounds like some Rave-outtake bullshit.
