How can it NOT be "live" if it was RECORDED LIVE??? [/quote] Because, as you have just pointed out, it is a RECORDING. A live performance usually takes place in some kind of auditorium with Prince and the band present and lots of people in the audience, with songs played live as you hear them - you must have been to one. A recording is something that you stick in your stereo and listen to (usually on a CD/tape), no matter what is recorded on it, it is still a recording and not 'live'. I'm well aware that the version of Purple Rain that we're all familiar with was recorded live (First Avenue in 83, I think), but when I play the CD in my stereo, it is merely a recording. I can't understand why I'm actually taking time out to respond to this, but then again I can't understand how you can not know the difference between live music and a recording of live music.

Purple Rain. Listen to the production. Its grand. The voice, the sound and the guitar. It is his Stairway To Heaven. And just like Led Zep with Stairway,Prince is the only one who can sing it. Anyone else looks ridiculous doing it. Thats how you can tell its the best. "Climb in my fur."

I'm sorry you just can not dis Purple Rain, most of you wouldn't be posting here without it!
Okay it is a bit of a bob seeger ballad, but it works every time! It really was the only song that shone at the emancipation launch party, it works at breakfast, in a kebab shop, in the shower and it has lasted nearly twenty years. Last December, works in the concept of the rainbowchildren, but if it was that good then tell me how often has he played it live... I mean that's where you make songs into anthems... I feel pretty, that's enough

Purple Rain and I don't even think the damn song is that good if it wasn't for the guitar solo, but it's still much better than LD. LD is just ok...not too good, not too bad, which ironically sums up TRC and pretty much everything he's done inthe last 6 years or so.

Gold-Gold-Gold...Why this song wasn't a huge hit I still wonder...So much better than the other two that U metioned...Purple Rain has a few good lines but not worthy of being an anthem...Aloha~~

Purple Rain or Last December?
They are both equal... in their musical merit... upon creation...

Hmmm...
I see your point. That's a tough decision... Blue Blue

At this point, I would say Last December.
Purple Rain seems to be a song to a specific woman - whereas Last December speaks to the masses (and also on a more epic scale).

Given the choice, I would say that there's a more genuine feeling in "Last December". Prince has come to a place where these words are true for him..."Purple Rain" is an anthem but what does it truly mean? As far as a personal anthem would go, I would choose either "Eye Wish U Heaven" or "Still Would Stand All Time"...Better Yet..."THE LOVE WE MAKE" from Emancipation is a GREAT under-rated song...anyone else feel me on this one?

Desperate is the day that is 2morrow 4 those who do not know the time has come 2 whip the dogs that beg, steal or borrow From the table God set 4 His Son Wicked is the witch that stands 4 nothing All the while watching 2 see U fall Deeper than the ditch that bred your suffering The one being dug right now by them all Happy is the way 2 meet your burdens No matter how heavy or dark the day Pity on those with no hope 4 2morrow It's never as bad as it seems until we say Precious is the baby with a mother That tells him that his Saviour is coming soon All that believe will cleanse and purify themselves Put down the needle, put down the spoon {x2} Sacred is the prayer that asks 4 nothing, oh While seeking 2 give thanks 4 every breath we take, oh Blessed are we inside this prayer 4 in the new world, we will be there The only love there is, is the love we make {x2} (The only love there is, is the love we make) Only love there is, only love there is The only love there is, is the love we make (Yeah) The only love there is, is the love we make

Last December is my least fave song on TRC. It is cheese. Purple Rain can't really be argued with. It isn't one of my favourite songs by a long way but as others have pointed out , live it is awsome
