There's no hidden meaning in Starfish & Coffee.
It's about a 'special needs' girl at school. and also a message to accept people for what and who they are, not to judge people by appearances.

It's not obvious from the lyrics that Cynthia is retarded, but Prince himself explained that that was what the song was about. The fact that Cynthia was a special needs child isn't important to the message of the song, the important thing is that she's 'different'. Here's the lyrics... It was 7:45 we were all in line 2 greet the teacher Miss Cathleen First was Kevin, then came Lucy, third in line was me All of us where ordinary compared to Cynthia Rose She always stood at the back of the line A smile beneath her nose Her favorite number was 20 and every single day If U asked her what she had 4 breakfast This is what she'd say Starfish and coffee Maple syrup and jam Butterscotch clouds, a tangerine And a side order of ham If U set your mind free, baby Maybe you'd understand Starfish and coffee Maple syrup and jam Cynthia wore the prettiest dress With different color socks Sometimes I wondered if the mates where in her lunchbox Me and Lucy opened it when Cynthia wasn't around Lucy cried, I almost died, U know what we found? Starfish and coffee Maple syrup and jam Butterscotch clouds, a tangerine And a side order of ham If U set your mind free, honey Maybe you'd understand Starfish and coffee Maple syrup and jam Starfish and coffee Cynthia had a happy face, just like the one she'd draw On every wall in every school But it's all right, it's 4 a worthy cause Go on, Cynthia, keep singin' Starfish and coffee Maple syrup and jam Butterscotch clouds, a tangerine And a side order of ham If U set your mind free, baby Maybe you'd understand Starfish and coffee Maple syrup and jam

the important thing is that she's 'different'.
I totally agree, he means "embrace difference, even if U don't comprehend it" [This message was edited Tue Oct 29 1:35:04 PST 2002 by Justin]

I never thought of Cynthia Rose as a special needs child. I just always thought that if she really had starfish and coffee, maple syrup and jam in her lunchbox then she didn't really have any food, so when everyone saw it they almost cried/died cause here was this extraordinary girl who was happy and beautiful eventhough she didn't have enough to bring lunch to school...
just my take on it... I'm firmly planted in denial

And yet another way to interpret this song is in the same vein as the Beatle's "Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds" - ie, basically an ode to LSD!
The psychedlic imagery of what's in her luchbox, the fact she draws a smiley face (which became associated with LSD, particularly in the late 80's) and that people would only understand if they set their mind free (something that LSD officinados claim LSD does, sets your mind free, opens doors of perception etc). The great thing about Prince songs is that they nearly always contain something that can be interpreted in different ways! ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

i really always thought this song was about racial harmony...let me explain:
everything in her lunch box was simliar to different skin colors: starfish are yellow coffee can be black or brown maple syrup is brown jam is red (or purple) ham is pale pink "set your mind free" has been, for years and years now, an anti racism slogan... cynthia was just like all the other kids (i.e draws happy faces, mix matches her socks when she dresses herself, etc)...her only difference was race like i said though, that's just my interpretation... peace.
