My Little Pill - Single Mothers/Women?

My Little Pill Lyrics
Artist: Prince (Buy Prince CDs)
Album: Vault-Old Friends 4 Sale
My Little Pill...what are your thoughts about this tune?

What's a single woman with no real man 2 do?
Tryin' 2 raise your kid when he couldn't give a damn about U
All my cares and troubles dive right off my window sill
Everytime I pop my little pill

A pixie does my laundry and the universe my will
All my cares and troubles dive right off my window sill
All my cares and troubles dive right off my window sill
Everytime I pop my little pill

Is this about birth control or drugs?

not exactly sure, but as a single mother i can tell U it is very hard to raise your own child when the father doesnt give a hoot.

mine is 12, homeschooled - educated by yours truly.

i dont pop pills, but whatever it is i'm taking..its working

cuz yes - the universe does indeed do my will

and there's always a pixie in my laundry.

me.
my innocence raped my trust betrayed my mind deceived my heart in smitherines and u've got the gall to breathe.

All my thoughts go towards you on this one, superkiss.
My now 80-year old mum brought up two children [me&my brother] on her own when my father died of cancer when we were respectively 14 months and six years old. She had no help from our too distant family and no car. She said what she found the hardest is decision-making: having to take all the big decisions regarding your children on your own, without being able to discuss them with someone close, having his opinion...
But she made it, and without pills, so it is possible.

And Prince, to answer your question - "What's a single woman with no real man 2 do?": have faith in her own strengths.

Us single moms rock
highfive
woot!

Im a single mom as well and with a 12 year old. I also have been raising her by working full time and I dont pop pills. So Prince listen up I think you need to quit popping pills yourself if you think that about single mothers.

The lyrics are definitely sympathetic for single mother's...and very possibly, the song is sarcastic in a sense that attacks, anti-depressants...

A pill does not chase away a man that doesn't love his kids or his wife...I do not know Prince's exact meaning...but the feeling Prince deliver's is compassion...as he seems to share the grief of a woman under these circumstances.

It's about drugs. Could be Valium...could be Zoloft...could be her kid's Ritalin. Same idea as "Mother's Little Helper" by the Stones.

There's something about this line:

All my cares and troubles dive right off my window sill

that I don't get. It's repeated throughout which makes me think there's more to it....I suppose if one pops a pill and hallucinates, the feeling is like diving...but the same could be true for an egg that is expelled....?

Since it is a rare Prince lyric that does not flat-out state what he means I would say the 'little pill' means some kind of drug, and the window sill lyric could be a reference to suicide, or just the attempt at, under the influence of such drug.

You're overthinking it. It just means the problems go away...fly out the window.

Also, this line:

A pixie does my laundry and the universe my will

Pixie? Cleanining up the "dirty laundry"? RU-486?

The song was released in 1999 (The Vault); at the same time the U.S. and Germany lifted the ban on RU-486, the abortion pill.

The universe my will?
