I dont know if (proably has) theres been a post asking this before but what does Prince's song Purple rain actually mean? or how do you interpret it?

It's about religion. I think the "Purple Rain" is God. But I could be wrong.

Purple Rain is the first album in which Prince writes this sentence:

MAY U LIVE 2 SEE THE DAWN

The dawn after a nuclear catastrophe, maybe. The dawn U see when U survive the purple rain.

Prince plunged in2 'The Dawn' project in 1986, but he had 2 shelve it 'cuz of 'Dream factory', not 2 count the countless projects he was in2 at the time.

The Dawn was about 2 come out in 1994, but its meaning, or better, its message, which I think was basically freedom (of the soul, of the body- a non WB world, so 2 speak) surfaced in other releases such as 'The gold experience', 'Emancipation' and 'The Truth'.

Prince followed (and partly still follows) a path, the path to freedom, and think he's almost totally caught it.

It's a marvellous and moving theory, if U think about it. But above all things, I really think it's noble.

For a while after that album came out, I had a twisted-logic opinion of where Purple Rain came from (it actually makes sense).

Starting with Controversy, then continuing on thru 1999 and Purple Rain albums, Prince wore a purple trenchcoat.

The obvious answer to why someone would wear a purple trenchcoat is because of Purple Rain. I'm not saying that the song is about a coat . . . instead, I'm saying that the coat inspired the "rain" aspect of the song and he expanded the rest.
