So many reasons...the fact that he's the most complete singer/songwriter/musician in history - there are better singers, better guitarists, better pianists and better songwriters, but no one else (bar Stevie wonder) can do all of these things so well, so many times...the face that since I bought my first Prince album (Diamonds & Pearls) I've tried to get my hands on everything single other thing he's ever recorded, whether good or bad...the fever-pitch anticipation every time a new album is due (the first and only time in my life that I will ever buy The Mail on Sunday)...the jaw-dropping live performances last year (especially the one at Koko)...the hope that there's still one career-defining album left in him...the fact that listening to Prince from an early age helped steer the other music that I got into. In the Early-Mid 90s most of my mates were into The Stone Roses, The Smiths, Oasis, Suede etc, whislt I was starting to get into James Brown, Sly & the Family Stone, George Clinton, The Fugees, Cypress Hill, RATM, Portishead, De La Soul etc. Some of this is obviously connected to Prince's music, some of it isn't, but i think there's a connection at some level...the fact that no matter what mood I'm in, I can find a Prince song to play. From Kiss to Peach to Gett Off to Sometimes It Snows In April and everything in between. There's barely a genre of music he hasn't dabbled in...Just some of the reasons why I'm still a fan

Because of this album..... and these shows last years.... Agreed! Can I borrow this? Shame we don't have any pics of the aftershow, but it's etched on my memory forever This is when I 're-discovered' him, after losing touch in the 90's, but 1999, When Doves Cry, Purple Rain, God were the songs I fell in love with 'back in the day'. I don't like getting older (do any of us?) but I'm SO glad I was there, then, and experiencing him when it all happened!! His O2 shows last year blew me away, and to experience it all again now - bliss!

Because I Fell in Love!!!
Not with him as a person - I'm still as miffed and oblivious to who the real Prince is right now, just as much as I was back when I first started liking him! But more with this Enigma! This man who's style, and music, commanded my attention! His reclusive nature keeping him mysterious and keeping you wanting more! Yet for someone who was supposed to be so shy or reserved would every year keep re-inventing himself, musically and visually, keeping you entertained and keeping your interest fresh! And he's been keeping it fresh every year for the last 22 years that I've been a fan! Prince spoils us but sometimes we are to spoilt or greedy to realise how good we have it!!! Shame sometimes. What I do know is that it will take more than the release of the odd weak album, or the odd bad business decision to take my Love away!!! I GOT TOOOOO MANY GOOD MEMORIES OF GOOD TIMES THAT I OWE TO PRINCE AND HIS MUSIC AND NOTHING - NOT EVEN HE HIMSELF - IS GONNA MAKE THEM GO SOUR!!!!! I can only say that as much as I would have liked to have discovered his sound earlier, I'm just as glad to have found it when I did!!! Life could be so Nice? We'll yes it could - and actually in this respect, it has!!! Good thread Cam!!! [Edited 4/15/08 3:33am] Life's a Parade! LoveLife, LoveSexy!

Another plus is that it'z real music by real musicianz-no fake stuff here! When u come away from a Prince show,u WILL b satisfied.4 this reason,I'd go anywhere I can afford 2 c him per4orm.If he did a show on the moon,I'd try 2 rent a spaceship 2 get there. He even has his own legion of celeb fanz, not only orgerz and quakerz.Over the yearz, the music and his attire have changed, but this change representz growth. He keepz me on the edge of my seat-wondering what 2 xpect next.Just when I thought he'd done all that there is 2 do,along comez the R&R Hall of Fame and the Superbowl! Never has there been so much hype surrounding the halftime per4mance,and I think AI had more viewerz the nite he was on since itz' inception.Being the class act that he is,he even thanked the viewerz 4 watching the halftime show.I adore his shy personality and appreciate his humor when he appearz on showz with the likez of Jay Leno r Bryant Gumbel. It'z touching 2 c him do 1 on 1's with Tavis Smiley r Oprah Winfrey.Casual fanz come and go,but real fanz r the 1's who know.A lot of folx claim 2 b fed up with Prince and his so called "antics" of late, but they break their necks getting 2 any show he popz up at,so as not 2 miss a moment.I could go on,but I don't want u guyz 2 think that I'm a fam. As Alicia Keyz so accurately said "There r many kingz, but there'z only 1 Prince" Great thread, purplecam!

His lyrics are fantastic and i think that is ultimately what has kept me a fan, as ive grown older ive seen more and more within each song, heard more of the layers of music and understood more of the lyrics. hes 10 years older than me so i have had a journey like him and can relate to his words. I still hold his lyrics up as the benchmark for all other songwriters,. I have become critical of other music because of this. I love loads of genres and other artists hold my attention for a small while but only for a tune or two. I always revert back to Prince. ps that is SUCH a good pic squirrelmeat!! walk with crooked shoes www.myspace/syblepurplelishous

Hey Cam. Its the whole package. Its the unreleased songs. Its the mature musician. Its the old music. Its the new music. Its the live concerts and the old ones catured on video for posterity. Prince is only 5 years older then me so he is my comtempory. A friend I only know from a distance, but I care for him just as I would a personal friend. I have been with Prince and he's been with me on each step of this 30 year journey. I would never have guessed how vital he would be as a musician for all this time with no end in sight.

First because of his back catalog, and great performances.
But mostly, because he is still out there, creating, and performing. The book is not closed yet. This week we have Coachella news, then he will perform on Leno. Some have questioned his relevance, when you can still be a headline act at Coachella I think that answers that. I remember when i was a kid people were talking about his relevance whenever a now forgotten acts had a few top 10 hits, and Prince wasn't there. the Timberlakes of the time. I'm a fan of a lot of great artists like the Beatles,Miles, unfortunately, there is no news, no hope of a new tour or new album. Luckily we still get to go see lengendary artists like Prince, U2, and Springsteen, and we got to check out while we still can!

I'm even more of a fan now than I was early on because of my finances. I've grown up with Prince and he has never failed to entertain me. His music is always a cut above. He is virtually a one man dynasty with so many talents and sheer energy that I can't help but admire and support him. I still look forward to his performances, releases, and new endeavors. Last year watching him stage dive 7/7/07 will live with me 4ever. Most of all I so appreciate what he's accomplished as an African-american all the while keeping his nose clean, and his soul nourished.
One more thing is I love to share him with my daughter. We watched his Housequake performance from SOTT last night and she was amazed (except for the cussing). She had to go to bed but wanted to watch Slow Love too, I told her I'll let her see the whole thing another time...She said like tomorrow...

Okay, since you asked Purplecam, I enjoy his music - from back 'n da day, to the present. I can't say I liked every single song he's ever written, because I don't know every single song he's ever written, as some I just discovered between 2004 - 2006, but a majority of the songs I am aware of, I do enjoy.
I love the one nite alone albums, in which I just purchased the live cd late last year. I also enjoyed some songs off the Rainbow Children cd. I love his r&b, bluesy tracks, some with a rock feel. I absolutely loved the experience of the past live shows from the late 80s and all the live shows in 2006/2007, and most of all, the private concert for NPGMC fans at Butter Restaurant in NYC back in 2006, which I thought was a nice thing for him to do for fans. I definitely enjoyed the whole "3121" experience, along with many of the songs on that album. I am honored that I was able to be called on stage by Prince, and dance for about 10 minutes with Tamar and the Twinz at the Empire Club in Vegas (although I still laugh when I think about the dance I did at that show with them, but it was fun anyway), and I do have some trinketts from some of those 3121 shows, like a few guitar pics and a prop version of a marocca that Prince handed out to a few fans (3), during the opening weekend of the 3121 Vegas shows, and me and other fans got to "high-five" him, so there's lots of memories behind the whole experience. I don't know him personally as an individual, but from the impression I get of him as a musician/artist, he seems to stand by what he believes in regardless of the criticism he receives from fans or the public period. Of course I would be lying if I said I didn't miss traveling to attend a few of his live shows in 2006, as it was a fun and an exciting experience, and I got to meet some other nice fans. But like you said Purplecam, it is the individual's experience and no one can ever take that away from you, no matter the criticism you get from other fans. The experience is what you make it, not how someone else makes it out to be for you. and as a fan, Prince owes me nothing, as I made the decision to be a fan of his music, just like I choose to be an admirer for other musicians' music, as the music and attending the live performances and making the decision to purchase an artist's music, is basically up to the individual, no one pulls your leg to do so. Anyway, Purplecam, that's my take on it, thanks for asking. Just to add, my 18 year old niece is now a fan. I was amazed. Just before I left for a short trip to the US Virgin Islands two weeks ago, she told me she watched Purple Rain and was amazed at his performances. She is now a fan. Hopefully one day, I could bring he4 to one of his live performances, should he come to the East Coast some time in the future. She needs to see him perform live to appreciate him as a musician. I was actually suprised to get online today and see so many great threads floating about. Damn, I actually think I missed this place the last few weeks If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.
