I Love it. From beginning to end!

Even though it has some risque content, it sounds so light and innocent yet charged with disco funk!

One of my wishes would be an updated live version of I'm Yours, Just like how he did with Bambi for Nude and Undertaker!!!

This was supposed to be the most joyous occasion in Princeville! pout

There were supposed to be Purple parties a plenty from one side of the world to the other! pout

Now it's just all been reduced to a footnote! disbelief

Wow, is it that long ago allready?

I mean times flies, i was only 4 when that album was released (I obtained it a lot later of course).

Alltough i consider it an impressive effort realising that Prince, as such a young musician, played and (practically) produced all of the music on that album himself, i think it suffers from not offering interesting, distinctive compositions and from overproduction (Prince did took 9 months to record that album, and according to himself, he was so perfectionistic in that process that it took the real life and engery out of the music).

His second album, Prince, was recorded in just weeks and sounds the better for that: more direct and focussed.

But ultimately, i consider Dirty Mind as his 'real' debut-album. On the first two albums you could hear he was a gifted musician, but the material and performances werent very distinctive, often copying what other artists around him were doing at that time (Soft and wet and I wanna be your lover, are typical for the disco-pop sound from that period, while Why you wanna threat me so bad is in line with then popular AOR-bands like Foreigner and Toto).
Dirty Mind still sounds like a sharp 'left-turn' from that two first albums: the original mixture of 'black' R&B and funk with 'white' pop-melodies and rock-elements became a blueprint of his music. And his blunt lyrics about sex and freedom made him much more distinctive.
Maybe we should thank his managers around that time, the ones who pursuaded him to release his demo's as a album...lol
Or maybe its Dez Dickerson we should thank here: his bandmember who is said to have introduced Prince to the new-wave music from that period. When i listen to Dirty Mind i hear echoes from bands like The Cars, Devo, Elvis Costello and the attractions and the B'52's. Influences that indirectly helped him to get into 'the saddle', and helped him to become a distinctive musician himself.

I know, I hope his birthday is not the same. Turning 50 is a very big milestone in ANYONE's life. I'm celebrating that too when the time comes. smile

I don't care though! I'm having the Prince party to end all Prince parties! Saturday, June 7th, Southfield, MI! Get to the city line on any of the four corners and the music will guide the rest of the way! wink

i still find it amazing to think that somebody who is producing brilliant music at the minute, has been producing music of the same calibre (and better) for longer than i have been alive. how many artists can keep raising the bar for so many years?

it is a huge credit to prince that he is as good as he has ever been, and i cant wait to celebrate that fact once again in Dublin!
with love, sincerity and deepest care.....

I agree totally. It's kind of my arguement to when the negativity arises here and comments about his recent stuff suck!!!! Rubbish.

How much can you squeeze out of one person? All the official releases, plus all the boots, and then all the associated artists?????

The man is amazing!!!! 30 years in the business AND STILL doing his thing!!!!

Go Prince!!!!!

Amen to that mentalist! highfive It's amazing that he's still around at all to do even half the stuff that he does. It's easy to forget that the man is going to turn 50 2 months from today. At some point, things will have to slow down, way more than now. Things are forever changing with Prince, some good some bad, but somehow through all of that, the unpredictability of it all is what makes this trip a blast and the music is the fuel that keeps the ride going at full blast!

Prince, Keep Bustin! woot!

For You will always be the album. And YES, "Soft and Wet" is still moist. "Baby" is my favorite ballad by Prince and I have never heard him perform it live. "I'm Yours" is a funk jam session.

Thank You, Prince! And thank you, Warner Brothers Records for signing Prince in 1977 so he could release For You.

But he sure could already play some mean guitar at his tender age. 'I'm Yours' and 'My Love Is Forever' are both tops. Does anyone know if he played the guitar on both 'Crazy You(LOVE the percussion on that one!)' and 'So Blue' as well? Some beautiful acoustic playing on those two songs.
