Why do we read 'em?!

the only thing that really gets on my nerves with reviews of music
by either critics or fans these days is that less than 5% actually
says something about the songs or the lyrics of the new album.

every single review in a magazine starts with half a page of blah
about an artists back catalogue, recounting successes as far back
as 1920, lol. then they drag out some of the latest gossip and in
the very last 2 paragraphs they finally get round to saying some
uninspired things about the new material.

seldom do reviews quote more than half a line from an albums total
lyrics.

with prince reviews it's particularly bad with 99% of magazine and
internet reviews starting about his size, then his WB fight, then
his internet recluse days, some stuff about sex, some stuff about
the name change and the JW and concluding:

"and then we have Planet Earth. granted there is no When Doves Cry
to be found here but the pint sized rocker does deliver his custom
grab bag album full of funk and soul. lead single Guitar is one of
his best singles since 1992's diamonds & pearls and recalls prince
at his peak, adding a splash of modern hip hop mid way through the
album and purple rain's cousin "lion of judah" finds prince "lying
on a floor in an all white room feeling very blue" we've seen better
but with prince even the crumbs are almost a complete meal"

ill

no probs that's that the internets are for!

I agree with your summation on the reviews of his albums, however. For a good 20 years I was reading with every new review "a return to form after last year's disappointing_____"

"Shake" sounds like that Carmen Electra rap song. I only say this 'cause Shake just started playing on my media player... neutral

In a strange way..."Right The Wrong" and "Get On The Boat" have a similarity for me. Maybe not musically, but rather the "feel" of them.

I think that the synth riff from Sex Shooter & the turnaround from She's Always in My Hair sound similar.

Well he quite often references his own stuff years later... for example the chorus of 'Push It Up' on NPS is directly lifted from 'Jam of the Year' on Emancipation. So they're not just similar but literally interlaced!

But soundwise Question of U and The One have a really similar musical feel to them, at the O2 he was playing the intro to ? of U and just segueing into The One. Both fabulous songs I think!

A couple of times I hear something in one of the songs which I recognise from something by someone else... given his stance on copyright I don't imagine it's deliberate but when he goes to such trouble to point out the occasional similarity (like on 3121.com just before it went all black the apollonia thing) it just feels like a reminder that sometimes melodies or musical arrangements can remind you of somebody else's song...
You might not like the taste but I'm still gonna stick your face in this FUNK

I always thought that Another Lonely Christmas was the evil twin to Purple Rain.

wow.

Actually, now that I think about it, yeah.

For some reason I always equated it to Sometimes It Snows In April. The later reminding me of an 'acoustic' version of the former. lol

The one you wanna see reminds me of Raspberry Beret somehow. One time The one you wanna see started up on my mp3 play, and I thought it WAS R.B. for a split second shrug

What about '17 Days' and 'A Million Days'? Yeah it's too obvious an example simply because of both of the titles. However, what I'm saying is that the theme in both of the songs is basically the same. They also have a pretty up-tempo sound vibe to them, despite dealing with the subjects of desperation and loneliness.

"You been gone 17 days, 17 long nights"

and then,

"Only been gone for an hour, but it seems like a million days"

How about 'The Question of U' and 'Under The Cherry Moon'! They really resemble each other sound wise I think.
