Damn, that's pathetic. This sucks...

Prince stole the song and modified it. He played his own version of Schon's guitar solo! Damn. They even play one exact note that's in Prince's Purple Rain. The instrumental part before Prince sings "Oooh" in Purple Rain is in there.

Wow. This is a travesty. Damn...

I knew he was influenced by Jimi with the Little Miss Lover sample but damn. What a ripoff. All these years I thought the song was completely original...

Whoa. You are easily swayed. It would take more than that for me to drop off so quick! I find it hard to believe he would actually set out to copy Journey.

There's really no difference between what Prince did, and James Brown & Fred Wesley modifying Miles' So What to come up with Cold Sweat.

This ain't a new phenomenon, and it damn sure ain't limited to just Prince!!!

Hello, just because something, sounds looks the same.
don't mean a person take it from some1.

I mean I'm a poet, And I have wrote poems or, songs just 2 turn around,
somewhere on the net looking up poems. Listening to random.
music I could swear ( though I try not 2 swear )This person had, to be in my head the, work is so close, to being the same. it happens!

So who's 2 really say who is copying or stealing less U have proof.

thats my take on it -

As a musician, I have to say that you are REALLY reaching here. I can only assume that this topic was brought up to start controversy, because, in reality, there is no connection.

Wow. James, basically, took that from Miles, too.

If you're going to be a musician, you should try to listen to people who have gone before you, to make sure that you don't copy them.

I know it sounds impossible, but there are only so many popular groups.

If Journey or Perry did not mention it during their "VH1's: Behind The Music", it doens't matter..

Prince follwed the Early 80's Coporate Power Rock Ballad formula...

So what?

Ever heard of Reo Speedwagon, Styxx, or Chicago/Peter Cetera and David Foster producing? Play their greatest hits before Journey's..

Or, listen to any "80's Easy Rock station"... lol lol falloff

I'd bet you know that Jimi was all over that song---years before this thread was created.

You can't miss it. I guess you were more disappointed for Journey.

as i said the songs are nothing alike, as far as "a few tones down" hearing similarity's there r only 7 notes that have sharps and flats in between in many songs if u listen close u can find many songs that have suchsimilarity's ..they didn't write the book 10000 song using D C and G for nothing.... seems to me
Prince once said " is there REALLY any NEW music" in a way the answer is NO the is not.. yet there is .....by the way using the word TONE in my opinion not that i know any thing ..usually refers to the effects being used to make the sound coming from the guitar... Musically if u do ur research u'll find that literally music as far back as u can go ..u'll find the cord work can be used only in one way using 3 different forumlars..the one who comes up with the fourth formula will be the richest in the world in a music sense..

The chord progression in "Purple Rain" sounds identical to "Faithfully",by Journey. For all you musicians out there,go take a listen.Even the guitar solo is the same. It's just in a different key.

I point this out because of all of the people who are saying that Alicia Keys copied "Purple Rain".

THEY ALL DO IT!!

Have you heard of a 10 year old singer/musician named Gabi Wilson? google her name. She is being compared to Prince and Alicia.

Good ear. I hear it too. STEAL is too strong a term, though. Prince LIFTED "Purple Rain" from Journey's "Faithfully." And the lift really doesn't appear until the end of the two songs. They are discrete enough to be considered seperate individual songs. Both well done. Love them both.

Guess what? It doesn't stop there. Where you hear Perry singing "I'm forever yours....forever yours.....faithfully!," start singing, "Can you take me high enough? To fly me over over yesterday. Can you take me high enough? It's never over. Yesterday's just a memory."

So it would appear that Prince wasn't the only one doing some lifting.

I'm sorry, but this is all bullshit. I'm with RipPoPtheregoMYTOP...

Anyone who knows anything about music theory knows that the chord progression in "Purple Rain" is about as simple as it gets (I major - VI minor - V major - IV major etc.). When you consider just how many artists there have been over the last 1000 years or so composing songs using a relatively limited 12-tone diatonic system, you're bound to come up with some similarities somewhere along the line.

Ooohhh, so it has a big climactic ending with a guitar solo and lots of wailing... so what? So does just about every other rock ballad I've heard. I'm not denying there's a similarity, only that there's a very good chance that it's just a total coincidence. As a composer myself there's been many times I've come up with something that I thought was totally original only to listen back to it the next day and realise that it's very similar to someone elses song.

"Stole" is out of the question. Prince has always been very vocal about his influence/inspiration as it relates to his music. I don't recall him ever speaking about Journey having influenced him, however we all that he was influenced by Jimi...that brings me to my point, I do hear a bit of Purple Haze in Purple Rain and only a very hint of Faithfully (similiar chords), which is merely coincidently. That is probaly the only reason that Prince called Journey to apologize...don't you know if Journey thought Purple Rain was stolen off Faithfully they would have gladly taken money if nothing more that to make Prince look bad. Prince did the right thing. "Purple Rain" is in a class of it's own and always will be. Just my 2 cents worth.
