I remember dancing my ass off to 'around the world' and 'tamborine'. I played it on my parents set, really loud. Those were my fave songs because they were so energetic.
Later, when seeing the video to 'new power generation', I was hooked, the energy, the attitude, the funk did it for me. In hindsight, I think I missed P's best years, studio wise that is. [Edited 3/18/08 3:11am]

Back in high school, I first heard When Doves Cry, and loved it because it spoke to my soul. But my first encounter with Prince face to face was in concert, that was the first time I ever saw the man. The concert was the best I've ever been to, which I never expected it to be.

As a kid I always loved When Doves Cry. I have always liked songs that have a darkness to them. And of course Partyman and Trust from the Batman movie which I probably watched 2295834598346359 times as a youngun'. Always loved those songs. But I still though of him as that gay dude. Until the RnR hall of fame thing. Never saw anyone play guitar like that. But his music still wasn't anything to me. He was guy who I thought was brilliant at guitar, but his music just wasn't my thing. Until my friend got Ultimate. Then I started getting more into his stuff, and then I heard Darling Nikki and that was that. Maybe we can go to the movies and cry together

I was 14, I flipped on the TV in England to BBC2 and was watching "Entertainment USA" which previewed new releases from across the pond.
They showed about 2 minutes of When Doves Cry and I'd never heard anything like it. I thought, "Amazing song...but the guys sunglasses look stupid!" A couple of weeks later, I had my first cassette Single, the 4 track "Doves/17Days/DMSR/1999. Thats it, I was hooked. Only problem was, the front cover of the cassette single had him in those damn silly shades again! .

My first "Oh, hey that's Prince" experience that I was old enough so I can actually remember?
04, Grammies. The real first one would be Batman. I've seen that flick a gazillion times not knowing P's music was in it or "I wanna be your lover." It always get heavy airplay, I can hear it, like, 3 times a day on the radio where I live, so that too. But... Up until a last year... I didn't know that was Prince I thought it was a girl... But I've loved that song since I was a baby.

Probably Little Red Corvette video, still a great song. I thought his little skippity dance in the solo break was funny, I thought he should have busted out a backspin or hurricane, breakdancing was huge at the time  My older sister and cousins were HUGE fans and then my older brother became obsessed, so I never had to buy an album because that was all the damn well played ALL THE TIME nonstop before they left the house. New albums and singles and videos were like AN EVENT in our house. When they moved out I had to start buying his stuff all over again. They kind of drifted off but here I still am.

My obsession is my sisters fault.
Back in 89/90 (i was 9), i was doing my usual listening to "Bad" by MJ, when my sis walked into my room and said: her: "WTF are you listening to this shit for?" Me: "huh?" her: "here listen to Prince you loser" (or something like that) She tosses me a tape, cant remember wot album, but i was hooked! Cya MJ! RIP 1958-2016 Prince RIP 1947-2016 David Bowie
