I'm sure this thread has been done before but I'm posting it as a way to find out about performances maybe I'm unaware of. Here are what I think are Prince's 3 best TV performances in ascending order:

3. 1987 MTV Music Awards: First just Prince by himself under a spot - or is that some weird hippie? Then in a split second there's about 400 people on stage. Can't keep up, which is just how I like it with Prince. And the new music was out of left field.

2. 2007 Suer Bowl: Just so you never forget who the best performer is today.

3. 1985 American Music Awards: Is this everybody's favorite? Serious chills when he knocks over the mic stand. And he looks like he is going to bust out in tears any second, which is appropriate to the song. This is my favorite because it is authentic Prince saying "Things will be different from here on out"

What do yalls think?

In no particular order:

Superbowl 2007
Superbowl press conference 2007
RR Hall of Fame 2004
SNL "Fury" 2006
SNL "Dirty Mind" era 1981 (I think)
VH1 Honors mid 90s
Grammy Awards 1985
Arsenio Hall 1991
Chris Rock show mid90s ("Facedown" w/MJ kick move)
American Music Awards 1985 (I think)
MTV (acoustic guitar show and Sway interview) 2004
..and yes...American Bandstand '79 (w/Dick Clark attempted interview)

BTW-does the Undertaker special count as a TV appearance?

That's all I can think of for now.

have only seen a few of the ones mentioned here...tried you tube but all the prince stuff has gone.

100% agree.
When that mike stand hit the deck, tears flowed from my eyes first time I saw that. What music is all about.
Seminal.

Brit awards when I noticed Wendy in the band. Again tears.

Well, I was lucky to see the press conference thing. Someone had got it from the NFL TV channel. They had finished w/ the players and coaches questions and then P shows up w/ the band (their amps, drums, mics, etc are already set up). P goes to the mic and acts like he going to take questions from the reporters, but starts playing Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" instead! The NFL had it taken down a day or 2 later...same w/ the Superbowl performance.

Yes to all.

I would like to add to his best,

MTV awards - '91 Gett Off!!!!

Brit awards '06 - Medley - with Wendy, Lisa and Sheila E - This performance for me was the one that dreams are mad of!!!

Grammys '04 - Medley - Even though Beyonce just got a bit too big for her boots!

[i]

The Brit awards performance was awesome and blew everyone off the stage.

He's also don another couple of good slots in the UK

I thought his 'baby knows' slot on TFI Friday was brilliant. Unshaven with his coat and gloves on - brilliant.

How could you leave off the NAACP Image Awards? I guess nobody on this forum saw it. Prince, Morris Day, Jerome, Sheila E... He tore it up. 2006 or was it 2007?
I have to say the Alma awards also.

As the song was ending he took his guitar off put fingers to his head (like a gun) and pulled the trigger. he then fell backwards into Mayte's arms and pasted away. His body guard came put and dragged him off stage. Everything was in beat to the song...even the gun sound and while the music faded so did Prince. I remember Dave holding up the CD and said: I was just informed that this CD will never be release which makes perfect sense he is here promoting it tonight. It doesn't seem he likes Dave anymore...maybe it was the wise crackes but the show opened with a 10 sec skit between Dave, Prince and Dave's band leader.

Meldo...

If you've ever seen the video for Dolphin... the live version is somewhat similar.

The visuals are somewhat similar to the end of the '7' video.

There is a lot of melodrama going on...

The song starts out with Prince being very subdued and then towards the end, he sorta sacrafices his self (or his original self so that he may be reborn!).

I just remember watching this, and thinking that nobody else could pull this off.

After the commercial Break, Dave keeps asking if Prince is alright? After falling to the ground and dragged from the stage!

All his performances on Arsenio Hall. His performance of "Dolphin" on David Letterman. His debut on American Bandstand. Debut on Soul Train. Superbowl performance. And finally, the 1985 AMA's showing of "Purple Rain". Classics!

I agree with the American Music Awards 85, I also liked his solid gold performances even though he lip sync it.
