PrintableRecently i listened to the Dirty Mind album again, and when listening to "Sister" again, it occured to me the lyrics to that song are quite smart in dealing with the subject. More deep when i made them out to be in the past.
The first verses seem to deal with the subject in a quite 'positive' way: A horny 16 yo Prince letting himself carry away by the lust, and at the same time using it as an 'excuse' for his often explicit lyrics (in those days). The way he uses that experience to 'shock' too benefit from it careerwise. I was only 16 but I guess that's no excuse My sister was 32, lovely and loose She don't wear no underwear She said it only gets in her hair And it's got a funny way of stoppin' the juice My sister never made love 2 anyone else but me She's the reason 4 my, uh, sexuality She showed me where it's supposed 2 go A blowjob doesn't mean blow Incest is everything it's said 2 be The chorus after that is more ambivalent, it speaks of images of lonelieness. Oh sister - don't put me on the street again Oh sister - I just wanna be your friend In the next part of the songs it seems like Prince is trying to focus on the 'negative' aspects of their relationship. Hey, he could use this experience to shock the audience, and put emphasis on his sexual image, but is a (sexual) relationship between a 16 yo adolescent and his twice as old half-sister really that healthy? I was only 16 and only half a man My sister didn't give a goddamn She only wanted 2 turn me out She'd take a whip 2 me until I shout Oh motherfucker, she's a motherfucker, can't U understand? Oh sister - don't put me on the street again Oh sister - I just wanna be your friend I know what U want me 2 do Put me on the street and make me blue Oh sister! Oh sister! These lyrics show a lot of pain and confusion. A sense of feeling 'used' by someone who is more mature then him and should have known better. It almost 'sounds' as this is something Prince began to realise when he wrote this song. To conclude: IMO 'Sister' is definately not a song gloryfing incest. It shows how a young, immature adolescent on a pure sexual level can be overwhelmed and impressed by such an experience, but at the same time can feel confused and betrayed by it on a more intimate level. | |

the best line " she showed me where it's supposed to go a blowjob doesn't mean blow" and the following line shows the conflict that if all to often in sexual abuse... they LIKE it, it feels good, yet they KNOW it is wrong and they want it to stop. 
That this song is often referred to as an "ode to incest" is disturbing to me. I guess it's just another symptom of our cultural notion that men are sexually dominant and incapable of being victims. Using the song titles from, "Dirty Mind." The jist is this: and has no bearing on Prince's meaning.... The brother was in love with his sister. And He convinced her to make love with him. Billy Joe was a friend to them both...but the sister was in love with Billy... so the sister writes her brother a note in her diary that lies about going uptown. Leaving her diary was a confession of guilt...and telling her brother to give her diary to Billy to throw off of the Tallahache Bridge, is where she would meet Billy so that she could run away from her brother. Exactly! Like i said before let's revers the rolls. Make it about a 16 year old girl and her 32 year old brother. Sure it feels goos, as it often dose for victims of sexual abuse, but the 16 year old KNOWS it is wrong but is powerless to stop it and thus the feeling of blame, shame, and guilt. The powerless feeling is fed by the fact that sex feels good but the truth is lost to the mind (no matter how dirty) of the typical teenager. I would like to hear some thoughts on the music. to me: The upbeat music is in sharp contrast to conflicted tone of the song. The weird almost disorienting transsission between "head" and "sister" start us off on a ride that in one hand makes 'no excuse' but defends itself at the same time 'i was only 16.' The 'happy' tone of the music, is probably a result of american culture.
The tendency to use something ambivalent, and nuanced, and turn it into something shallow and sensational is something you see a lot in american movies. In those movies things are often 'abstracted' to 'good' against 'bad', right against wrong. Of course reality is not that simple and plain dualistic, but Americans have the tendency to beat all the life out of any discussion. In the end, americans are affraid of real feelings, real emotions, they rather want it to be like some smooth, controlled quasi-film like environment.... | |

To me the happy tone of the song lends it more complexity than if Prince had paired the theme of incest with a more traditional sad "woe is me, pay attention to me" feeling tune. It underscores the complexity of emotions an abuse victim would be feeling. Clearly, incest is a bad thing, but like any other abuse the victim's response to it might not be so clear-cut. If I am not mistaken this song was written about his half sister and was a dig at her and husband for trying to take advantage of him (talent wise) when he was trying to get into the biz. I believe the same sister tryed to sue him for U Got The Look saying it was a song he stole from her called Whats Cooking In My Book. |
