Simple... he doesn't want to (or feel the need to).

When it comes to his own past, he has zero interest. He's only interested in
what the next project will be and really doesn't want to waste his time (as he
sees it) sorting out or revisiting what he's already done.

Dead On It.

Oh please. The man is nothing but an oldies act live. He's been living in nothing but the past for the last twenty years.

He won't release remasters because he'll never put out dirty words again. As has been stated before, it's the reason they had to change the Ultimate track list and drop Erotic City and it's the reason he'll never get behind a remastered Dirty Mind, etc.
No hard feelings.

Considering the quality of his latest records, I tend to agree with you.

And another thought on him not looking back -- what an absolute joke -- we're talking about a man who recorded 1999 The Remaster. Yeah, he's always forward thinking.

Not to mention, the cold facts that would arise.

Like, I'm sure P isn't too keen on seeing, say, a remastered Around the World in a Day outselling Planet Earth by a ratio of 73 to 1...

I know what you mean, up to the late 80's he dictated the music scene and always had everyone guessing, now he tends to take notice of the music scene.

I don't know what his reasons are,but I think it's shame that his classic albums haven't been remastered. Many of his CDs (Dirty Mind,Controversy,1999,SOTT) are begging for a fresh remaster. The sound quality on these CDs is crappy.

I guess the master tapes for both released and unreleased material are sitting gathering dust. I believe tape has a finite life and starts to deteriorate at a rate dependent on temperature and atmosphere.

The longer these are left the worse these will get.

But then again, maybe they've all been digitally archived. Who knows? Not me!

The thing that frustrates me is that unless Prince destroys his vault material it will be released some day. I'm sure that whoever gets control of the vault after Prince passes will release at least some of it. This may be selfish but I would like a chance to enjoy this material while I am relatively young.

My ideal solution? WB remasters featuring B-Sides and 12" mixes as bonus tracks with a bonus live disc from the corresponding tour. Prince can then release studio outtakes in whatever way he wishes. WB wins, Prince wins and the fans win.

1. Not enough demand.

2. Not enough money

In that case.....why would any artist/record company do remasters?

well the question becomes, how many remasterd sets do we need on any artist. I already had a "remastered" box set from zepplin and now mothership arrived supposidly remastered yet again.

sometimes remastering is a waste of time cause 4 every new piece of technology we're gonna need a new remastered version?
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Which is quite a shame really, because he hasn't been in the ZONE for quite some time! If he could step back and actually take a moment to honestly judge and realize and focus in on the ZONE he was ONCE in musically, he would see what a hungry mutha-fucker he once was, and stop treading water like a total has-been - man, wouldn't that be a sweet change!

I love him and all, but fuck, someone has to step up and say the King's wearing no clothing! NAKED & SOMEWHAT SAD

Stop fucking treading water, and actually fucking challenge yourself for once this decade! (like you once did on a yearly basis when you weren't so fucking comfortable and boring!!!)

You have 1000% more talent than most, but you've never really pushed yourself! Why is that????

There may be one or two fans that agree, I'm SO waiting for the truly great Prince album..... I know it's there somewhere....

seriously....

Now, the double 0's, great memories, and still the musical better of all that's out there...

But to have been there in the 90's.... ahhh, that was straight-up pretty God-damn cool - a truly funky mutha-fucka.....

BUT.... To have seen him in the 80's, now that mutha-fucker, was to have seen the essence of a pure cool untouchable living legend in his prime in its most purist state.... the fucking musical god!!! With balls the size of mountains!....

I'm sick of people blaming "Warners" - the reason Prince releases are in totally crap condition isn't because of Warners.... it's cos Prince cant come to any agreement with them (funny how every other artist in their history can make a friendly relationship with the "nazis"...)

Dude, face the really simple fact that they MADE YOU!! U would be totally and absolutely nothing without them - Find peace in that simple fact that they created your legacy and do some business with them... Stop being such a primadonna bitch - without the Warners years you are NOTHING!

(apart from The Most Beautiful Girl In The World) you haven't had a hit of any significance since Warners ('04) (that's gotta hurt the ole ego like a mutha-fucka! but its sadly true...)

You NEED somebody to direct you, video/music/career-wise - accept it, without serious direction you just tread the same old bland waters....

The greatest artists of the last 100 years had a producer, somebody who pushed them - God-damn it man you need it BADLY!!!

Prince producing Prince has become so run-of-the-mill, it's really embarrassing . You really are so much better than that!!!

For fuck sake man accept the fact that you need a PUSH!!!!

You have greatness just waiting to happen, but Prince the producer is stuck in the early '80's and cant bring it out - Prince the musician can - just give him someone capable of dragging it out - a real producer, just once for christ sakes man!!!!....

Have to disagree with parts of your post. His greatness has already happened. He, like many other musical greats, has paid his dues and has nothing to prove anymore. A producer will probably help a lot but he has never worked with one and at 50 he never will.

I agree Warner played a big part by investing in him and supporting him. However to say that Warners totally made him is misleading. Prince is Prince, because of the direction he chose to take with his music and the persona he created which is so unique. I highly doubt Warners, like they do today with these young artists, had their executives sit down and concoct this package of a man, to me that part was all Prince. A great relationship that soured, it happenes. Look what happened to Janet Jackson and Virgin. She too after so much success with them did not have favorable things to say about them...It happens.

I have to agree, nothing is as crappy as sorting through previous work, not when you can be creating new ones with that time.
