Last night. I think Winehouse is the new Nora Jones. Nora Snora zzz

Do you seriously think that Planet Earth had a song that qualified as Song or Record of the Year? More importantly, do you think Planet Earth could seriously go up for an Album of the Year nomination? Or is that just an opinion?

In my opinion, Planet Earth did deserve more noms, but it didn't deserve any love for the Big Four including Album, Song, and Record of the Year.

He won 2 in 2005, but one was for "Musicology" for traditonal R&B vocal performance, or something like that.
Anyway Kanye won as many Grammys last night as Prince did in the entire decade of the'80's.
I don't care which way you slice it, that's fucked up.

I do think "Purple Rain" should have won the Grammy for album of the year, but still like others have stated there are so many other great artists that have never won a Grammy. Look at Marvin Gaye for example. "What's Going On" is maybe the most important album to come out in the past 35+ years yet it didn't win anything at the Grammy's, instead he ended up winning his first Grammy award years later for "Sexual Healing", now that is some bull****, so i'm sorry but i'm finding it really hard to feel sorry for Prince because he's ONLY won 7 Grammy's.
"And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ heart

"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always heart

Marvin's lack of Grammy recognition is absurd, but he never enjoyed the mainstream pop success that Prince did from '82 to '87. Prince was recognized, at the time even, as one of the pop/rock icons of that decade, and to come out of that period with the same amount of Grammy awards as Kanye did in one night is inexcusable.

It may be 7, but 3 of those have been in the 00´s, how is it possible that he only won 4 in the 80´s, albeit that said, 84 was his main yr in America, the following yrs his music seemed more focused on a European or worldwide audience. Add to that, the "we are the world" incident did not go down well at all and it took him many yrs to put that behind him.
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Supposedly because: "Sign O' The Times" was seen as a "return o funk and R&B" type of record, and The Grammy's Academy decided to give U2 every Pop and Rock Grammy in 1988.

I prefer that. The more Prince is treated like a puzzling anomaly, the better.

purple rain should have been a thriller like night for prince, that is a crime because he combined the trick with a hot movie. SOTT was not promoted well in the states only princeheads immediatly recognized it as a masterstroke.

Its funny cos I thought it was terrible, now her performance with prince at the indigo2 THAT WAS AMAZING! she has a fab voice and he brought out some extra qualities with the arrangement, but the grammy performance seemed so stilted and affected. Could be she was nervous she certainly looked shocked when she got the award. Im guessing it was maybe the first as we only got a short version here in the UK.

and I agree who the heck is nora jones - so boring so predictable, amy winehouse is real trailor trash with a horrible accent but the voice of honey and such depth, she just needs mentoring by someone great to get her out of her adverse publicity cycle she in.

Some believed that PR suffered from Thriller backlash...essentially the academy didn't want to have a repeat sweep of the awards.
But, while there may be some truth there I think you just need to look at Grammy history to understand why Prince's peak work was not honored. Creative, brilliant work is often overlooked. The academy tends to honor safe, popular music that fits nicely into current music. Purple Rain was a seismic shift in the music world- to say nothing of the sheer brilliance of 1999. Such creativity is not fully grasped by the old world that runs the academy that's why music becomes popular and fits in with a specific traditional genre will get more honors and acts that truly change music- Prince, Beatles, Bowie, Clinton, PE, Zep, and even Springsteen don't take home the lions share of awards.
But man purple rain losing to all night long is hard to believe...

WRONG.

Grammies, just like every other large award, are just politics. They have NOTHING to do with the quality of music.
I couldn't give a fuck who has a Grammy and who has not, to me they don't mean shit.

I believe the quirkest moment for him in Grammy history was when he didn't receive the Album of the Year Grammy for Purple Rain nor Sign O The Times. I mean if you look back at 1984-85, Prince ruled the whole pop scene with that whole Purple Rain project. Why in the hell did the folks at the Grammys vote Lionel Richie's Can't Slow Down as AOTY? It was an amazing record and all, but PR was just a monument in music at that time. What do you all think?

'Can't Slow Down' is a superb album but yeah,I agree with you.I think 'Purple Rain' didn't get the awards it deserved.

I'm not saying that The Joshua Tree was a better record than Sign, but I can see the Grammy voters would vote for it. Purple Rain defintely has had a bigger cultural impact than Lionel's record.

You also have to remember, there weren't that many people who were bigger in 1984 than Prince & Lionel Richie.

SOTT topped every critics list in 87.every one of them.in fact it stands in the village voice as the only lp to be unanimously voted as best lp.(if i do remember correctly)but losing to U2 is acceptable but to lionel richie that was fucked up.if u all remember not one prince song(songs he has performed that is including when doves cry)has been nominated for song or record of the year.matter of fact when doves cry,lil red corvette, sign o' the times, raspberry beret...his big huge singles have never been nominated at all.

I think this is actually a result of the level of competition and the quality of the music back in the 80s. Think about it - while Purple Rain was out, Micheal Jackson, BVruce Springsten, Madonna, and Lionel Richie were doing the best work of their careers. Newer artists like U2 and Cnydi Lauper were coming up. The fact that Prince was able to standout at all was remarkable.

It's a utter disgrace that Prince only got 7 Grammys. Prince, as usual, got robbed. The Grammys are nothing but a joke and the general public is starting to realize this cause the ratings are lower and lower every year. As said before, a Grammy does not equal quality work.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Just sayin', in the grand scheme of things, this is another instance where Prince has been overlooked.
Apparently I'm not the only one who believes this.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.
