Planet Earth and 3121 have a lot in common.

Think about it. Both start with scintillating openers, both have a laughably bad modern R&B seduction song (Incense and Candles and Mr. Goodnight), both have a guitar track (Guitar and Fury), both have a catchy dogmatic song (The Word and Lion of Judah), both have one knock-out ballad (SHOE and The Dance), and both have really disappointing closers.

They're not that different.

Not in so many words... but I do agree with you that these albums have a lot in common... at least more so than Planet Earth with Musicology.

That's why I like 3121 more now than I used to... because I saw similarities in both and gave me more reasons 2 like 3121.

The similarities I see are:
*musicially, The Dance & Somewhere on Earth... both piano-based ballads (also making them the strongest track of their respective album)
*guitar-oriented tracks where one guitar riff is repeated throughout the song (Fury & Guitar... both of which I hear are better live)
*2 R&B tracks that have been targeted as being mediocre (and I happen to like both a lot... although one a little more than the other cloud9 )

and you're right... the ending tracks kinda leave you hanging and make it seem like the story's unfinished.
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

honestly, that describes pretty much all of his albums in the last 15 years.

Ok so that says what exactly? You find them both to be the same but do you like the CD's at all? That, to me, is more important in the end.

I do like both albums. I used to hate Planet Earth, but I don't think it's bad anymore. The first four tracks are awesome.

Both the albums are an almost equal mix of inspired work and tolerable filler; with some intolerable trash thrown in. They're an intriguing dichotomy of Prince's daring creativity and insecure adherence to established genres.

I played 3121 a couple of weeks ago and I still love it. I'm going to play Planet Earth soon.
