If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

There are no performances on it. It's an 'officially unofficial' documentary which includes some interesting interviews with some of Prince's former assosiates (including some big wigs such as Dez Dickerson, Alan Leeds and David Z) and various music critics. The focus is on the years 1978-1989.

It's quite interesting if you're into rock documentaries, but it's by no means 'the definitive' Prince documentary. Worth a look, but don't expect a masterpiece.

As always with these unauthorized documentaries,
even tho the interviews might be intresting,
they use this cheezy background music because they don't
have the rights to use the real deal

I got this information about Purple Doves from Amazon.com:

PRINCE The Glory Years (2007 UK Region 2 PAL DVD, a documentary film which reviews and re-captures this golden decade and with the aid of his friends, colleagues, fellow musicians and other notable contributors, helps discover why Prince RodgersNelson simply stole the ‘80s as far as music was concerned, including classic Prince performances, re-assessed by a team of esteemed experts, with live and studio footage, brand new interviews with Prince’s closest confidantes and rare & seldom seen photographs, the extras section includes extended interviews & an interactive gaming feature).

Are you sure there are no Prince performances? Is there any Prince at all on this DVD? Or just people talking about him?

Yes, I am sure. The DVD consists primarily of people talking about Prince and their experiences with him and his music. Prince himself does not make an appearance. They do show a few snippets from some of the music videos while they're talking about them (1999, Doves Cry, Kiss etc.), but there are no actual "performances" per say.

Well, there aren't many out there really. This one's not too bad. The only other option is the Prince Unauthorised DVD, which is similar in that it's more or less people talking about their experiences with Prince. But it's about 15 years old now, and somewhat amaturish.

There's also another doumentary that was part of the Omnibus series in the early 1990s. It's often refered to as Prince: A Musical Portrait. It's the most 'official' one there is, as it does include some rare footage and even explores the inside of Paisley Park. However, as usual, Prince is not interviewed, and it is kind of dated now days. Unfortunately it's not for sale, but it's often broadcast on TV once or twice a year.
