1993 was the first year without a new P album since 1983

1993 was the first year without a new P studio Lp since 1983, after an amazing winning streak including PP, Parade, SOTT, BA and Lovesexy...
What do you think?
Was he depressed about the relative "failure" of the Love Symbol Album? Was he artistically drained? Was he unsure about the NPG sound? Did he only focuse on the Hits project? Was he working on the Ulysses project but he dind't manage to release it in 1993? Was he already fighting with WB over the release of the Gold experience?

anyway,
1991 WB wanted to release a best of but P. got his wish with a new album
so this was compromise plus of course the contract stuff.

Come was released in the summer of 1994, and we are talking here about studio albums (not compilations or live albums wink )

1993 saw the release -- in the fall -- of The Hits and B-sides. Come and 1-800-NewFunk, as well as the BEAUTIFIL xperience EP were released in 1994.

A new Prince CD was "sort-of" released with The Hits / B-Sides 3-CD compilation. It included certain trax that were previously unreleased and certain B-side rarities that have not been released, at the time, on CD.

I thought the 1993 Hits Cd was something Warner Bros. wanted Prince to do.
Not Prince's idea.

I way to give a break between albums.

I guess in 1983' Prince was busy with the 1999 tour and preparing for Purple Rain. And 93' was probably Prince on a love break.

i think he just had too many plates up in the air with the extensive
touring after the symbol album, picking some new tunes for warner's
hits and bsides collection, being disgruntled about his contract and
deciding on the name change.

plus he recorded a whole shitload of material at that time as it was
the conception period for most of the come/gold/chaos material and i
think he held onto it for a bit because he kept recording new songs,
finding his tougher edgier muse and thinking of different ways to be
releasing the material he had tucked under his belt by the time.

so i guess that amidst the soul searching, the fucking, the touring,
the recording and the legal nitpicking and the name change and that
hits/bsides release, 1993 had come and gone in a flash for prince.

we are fortunate to have an artist who constantly puts music out.. we might even be alittle 'spoiled' about it too cause really .. what other artist is putting albums out every year? .. that's Prince's fault giggle .. see what you did Prince? .. we 'expect' albums every year now.. and already folks are talking about 'where's the new 2008 album'? giggle .. you did that Prince hah!

Actually, despite not releasing a 'new' album of his own, Prince put out an
enormous amount of material during 1993! Here's a list of all the albums
released in 1993 which featured new Prince songs...

Carmen Electra - Carmen Electra (February 9th)
Go Go Dancer / Fantasia Erotica / Everybody Get On Up / Fun / Just A Little
Lovin’ / All That

Louie Louie – Let’s Get Started (February 16th)
Get Blue / Dance Unto The Rhythm

Candy Dulfer – Sax-A-Go-Go (March 1st)
Sunday Afternoon

Monie Love – In A Word Or 2 (March 9th)
Born 2 B.R.E.E.D. / In A Word Or 2

The Steeles – Heaven Help Us All (June 8th)
Well Done

New Power Generation – Goldnigga (July)
Goldnigga Pt.1 / Guess Who’s Knockin’ / Oilcan / Deuce & A Quarter /
Black MF In The House / Goldnigga Pt.2 / Goldie’s Parade / 2gether / Call
The Law / Johnny / Goldnigga Pt.3

Jevetta Steele – Here It Is (August 10th)
Hold Me / Open Book

Mavis Staples – The Voice (August 24th)
The Voice / House In Order / Blood Is Thicker Than Time / You Will Be
Moved / The Undertaker / Melody Cool / A Man Called Jesus / Positivity

Prince - The Hits 1 (September 14th)
Nothing Compares 2 U / Pink Cashmere (Live) / Peach / Pope / 4 The Tears
In Your Eyes (Video Version) / Power Fantastic

Earth, Wind & Fire – Millennium (September 14th)
Super Hero

George Clinton – Hey Man… Smell My Finger (October 12th)
The Big Pump

Tevin Campbell – I’m Ready (October 26th)
The Halls Of Desire / Uncle Sam / Paris 1798430 / Shhh

That's 38 new or previously unreleased Prince songs released in one year.
(That's not including the new versions of previously released tracks, like "4
The Tears In Your Eyes", "Nothing Compares 2 U" & "Melody Cool" etc.)
That's more new songs than appeared on all 3 discs of Emancipation!
Also remember that Prince was touring the prince album during 1993 too.
The second leg of which (The Act II tour) didn't finish until September!
Also, don't forget that the prince was released very late in 1992 (October),
so single releases and promotion for it were still happening for the whole
of the first quarter (the last single for the prince album: "The Morning Papers"
was released in April 1993)

Damn, that's impressive when put like that! cool

It be very cool to see a list like that for every year from the 80's til now.

That'd be a cool little project to do in after-effects, get jpgs of all the various artists album and single covers and run thru any given year showing everything released that year that he'd written or played on... Pity he'd probably sue if it was stuck up on utube
