seeking a higher self man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

God some (most) of you here are so anal. Why must everything he does be analised and disected? It's just a song at the end of the day. Who really cares what it is about? Oh and IT IS an obvious sond to decypher. Forget the stupid shit at the start. The rest is self explainatory.

The Ladder is just a remix version of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven. It's a very good song tho.

The Ladder is a spiritual search for salvation, just like the song explains...It is the freedom to learn that everyone is important and part of God's creation....Either that or it's the ladder that leads to the door that goes nowhere. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

"Everyone's looking for the ladder".
It means that when we really need to fix or install a ceiling fan, we'll find that we gonna need something to get us up there. In other words, in these types of situations, we're all just like Prince. Short.

The beginning of the song is an important element of the entire of the song...
Once upon a time in the land of Sinaplenty
There lived a king who didn't deserve 2 be He knew not where he came from Nor where he was going He never once said thank U, never please In this verse basically it's talking about a king who didn't deserve to be king. From the line "he never once said thank U, never please" one could surmise that this king took things for granted, and wasn't very nice. The lines "he knew not where he came from" and "nor where he was going" could imply that this King didn't know about God, about "coming from God" and "returning back to God". (Keep in mind during this time Prince was very much into God being a part of you, seeking God within, and that if you don't get it right the first time "you gotta come back and face the light again".) Most people sorta go through life like this king. Now this king he had a subject named Electra
Who loved him with a passion, uncontested 4 him each day she had a smile But it didn't matter The king was looking 4 the ladder What's interesting in this verse is that the King had someone who loved him unconditionally, but was unaware of it, it didn't matter to the king. "Looking for the ladder" could imply that the King was looking for an easy way to the top, which is supported by other lyrics in the song. It could also be that the ladder symbolizes a bridge of sorts, a getting from "here" to "there" without paying attention to how one gets from "here" to "there" (sort of like when you climb a ladder to hang a chandelier, you aren't concerned with all the rungs of the ladder, just getting from "here" to "there" without paying attention to each step.) Everybody's looking 4 the ladder
Everybody wants salvation of the soul The steps U take are no easy road But the reward is great 4 those who want 2 go The first two lines here imply that everyone is looking for the easy way to salvation, everyone wants to find that ladder. BUT it's not that easy, the journey to salvation is difficult but the rewards are great for the one that wants to undertake that journey. A feeling of self-worth (everybody's looking)
will caress U (for the answers) The size of the whole wide world will decrease (how the story started) (and how it will end) The love of God's creation will undress U And time spent alone my friend, will cease Everybody is trying to find themselves, to find their purpose, to find meaning in their lives, (thus everybody's looking for the answers to how the story started and how the story will end). "A feeling of self-worth will caress U, the size of the whole wide world will decrease, The love of God's creation will undress U, and time spent alone my friend, will cease" means that once you take the journey, once you receive that reward, you realize just how small the world really is, a world of One, and the Love of God strips you bare (right down to your very soul) and you realize you were never alone. Everybody's looking 4 the answers
How the story started and how it will end What's the use in half a story, half a dream U have 2 climb all of the steps in between (yeah, we ride) If all you ever seek is to know how the story started and how it ends, you only have a half a story. This is a very zen thought. When your dancing, you don't dance waiting for it to be over, you don't wonder how you started dancing, you are in the moment and each step is a lifetime in and of itself. The whole purpose of dancing isn't to start and stop, it's the whole process, all of the steps inbetween. U, U gotta climb, U gotta climb (U have 2 climb all)
all of the steps in between (the steps in between) self-explanatory ~ you look at each step, you have to take each step, there isn't a bridge from here to there, it's a process Then again, this is just my take and could be completely wrong.

It's funny you should say that! The story I heard was this... Prince comlained about some food his chef served him. His chef super-glued his car keys to the cieling as revenge. Prince went looking for a ladder! How true this is I guess we'll never know!

He needed one for a scene of a film he was writing at the time called Under the cherry Moon purely so Jerome Benton could through stones at his ass!!!!
On a serious note I find it the weakest song of anything he did in '85, and subliminally preachy. Bland!!!! Give me Temptation instead any day!!!! Life's a Parade! LoveLife, LoveSexy!
