Today.
The raunchy rock sound of Computer Blue. Any version. That beat. That guitar. Them lesbian chicks raunching it up. Everything. That scream. Them synths. Probably best, most straight forward rock sounding song he ever did. Sublime. The soundscapes, the loneliness, the layering of Crystal Ball. Often described as a key song in his ouvre, but that has more to do with the fact it is his least easy to identify song. It puzzled people, after Pruple Rain. To me, this song totally translates into the state of mind I was in, back in 1988, when I first heard it and made it the lead off single to the soundtrack of my somewhat weird life I was leading. I remember that summer, when I walked around with a walkman, immersed in that sound, the shoddy bootleg quality of the song on tape making it a weird experience. I remember how the song mirrored all my moods at once; changing my life, my anxiety, my hope; everything. Just when I felt like I would not be able to make a connection with Prince's music ever again, the man's money making machine sent me the album One Nite Alone. It was a collection of mediocre songs, but there, in the beginning of the album, he had stashed the title track that is of such a haunting beauty it made me warm the first time I heard it. The exquisite feeling of drawing me in with just one song has not really repeated itself ever after. One Nite Alone is to me the kind of song that made me Prince fan, thing just is that back in the day he was able, for a short time of about six years, release albums FILLED with songs like these; pushing the envelope of sound and production like no other singer, songwriter, producer, performer could. But that was then. This is now. And stuff is complicated to some, simple to me; Prince's magic is over and done with, until the next One Nite Alone. bold edit [Edited 1/12/08 15:05pm]

Daring. But you are right. Nice assessment. And thanks for explaining your choices. It makes the read much more interesting. I actually had another top three ready, but decided against it, cuz it was an EASY, logical top three. I went for the ones that wow-ed me on first listen. That sank their musical claws in me, to stay with me through the decades. I am going to listen to Computer Blue one more time before bed. Hawt.
