I don't hate it, but I don't fawn over it. Can't say I agree that there are no R&B songs either. And even if there weren't, R&B isn't the only music in the world.

I'll let you in on a little secret; though I like SOTT and wouldn't be without it (because I think there are essential songs on it), I think it's a bit overrated.

Now comes the part where people blow a gasket in their domes and preach to me about its greatness ...

I don´t hate it, of course not. But there are 2 songs in it that I just can´t stomach: It and Slow love.

But there is fantastic music inside too:
I could never take the place of your man
Sign of the times
Housequake
If I was your girlfriend
Strange relationship

All of the above are unique Prince songs, don´t you think?? eventually, you will get back to it again and you will learn to like it, there is no other way wink

As for instantly not liking Sign O The Times, well you may change your mind in a couple years time. It seems you're still quite new to Prince from the sounds of it. One thing that seems to happen quite often with Prince is that instantly likeable albums e.g. Diamonds and Pearls eventually lose their appeal after a while. Whereas, those records from the back catologue that don't seem great at first, somehow turn into the most mindblowing records inexplicably over time. I found that happening to me with Controversy, Around The World In A Day and unbelievably Graffiti Bridge!

I think the video collection of Sign O The Times Live much better than the CD.

I don't see how it is possible for a Prince fan not to like this album, it has every ingrediant that you'd expect Prince to bring to the table. If you like you're pop crossover you can take SOTT, Starfish and Coffe, U Got the look. If you're typical Prince jams you can B happy with Housequake, Its Gonna Be A Beautiful Night or Play in the Sunshine. I could never take the place, It, Hot thing are rock type classics. Adore , slow love and forever in my life are brilliant ballads. Leaving you with the songs which only Prince could possibly perform, namely If I was You're girlfreind and The Cross.
Its as close 2 perfection as is possible
I also think that as a lover of music generally, not just Prince specificlly

I was wondering how many times you listened to the album before you reached the opinion that its wack? What other Prince albums did you hear or use as a point in comparison when you reached that decision?

I agree. Some fans treat "Sign o' the Times" as if they created it. Surely, I love it, but I have problems with those who don't. It shouldn't be an issue- fans of Prince should be able to have an affinity for whatever album they choose and not like other albums. Who cares if someone likes "New Power Soul" more than "Sign o' the Times?"

At the time of its release many critics panned the album and it didn't sell as well as previous efforts at the time. But as Moonbeam stated you should like or dislike whichever album you choose to. I would like to add don't get rid of it just yet. Perhaps it will grow on you over time as it did with many fans and critics.

Wow...this album is Prince at his most intelligent, prolific, dreamy, and pertinent. Seriously now, what Prince album is your favorite if you dislike "Sign"?

If I had to narrow my entire collection down to just 5 albums, this would be the first I'd grab. And I haven't even listened to a bit of it in months...thanks for the inspiration to cue it up! smile

Of course, everyone has their personal tastes and that's cool, but what you just said is what makes SOTT absolutely incredible. He never sounded like that album before and never sounded anything like it after.

I love SOTT for its quirky side...The Ballad of Dorothy Parker, Starfirsh and Coffee, IIWYG, Play in the Sunshine. To me, 0(+> is a fine album, but when I compare it to SOTT, it just seems more dumbed-down and mainstreamed.

I think we should all warm to new fans, but these ideas are so highly irregular. In order to appreciate Prince's music, you must like SOTT and Lovesexy. I'm not saying my taste is better than yours, I'm just incredulous, dumbstruck etc. etc. Rush out & buy Lovesexy right now my freind.

Sign of the Times is the one that got me really, really hooked.. I couldn't listen to anything else right after I bought it (and I did - on cassette - back in 1987) for a long, long time.
The magic starts with the intro to the title track- it's magic all the way through... 'till the final chords of Adore..

So I don't really dislike it, no...

...and, if I might add, not only does SOTT amaze me musically, it's also my favorite album cover. smile Proof that computer-generated art will always be trumped by good photography.

SOTT is the one thing I always keep in my back pocket for when I have to play the role of Prince apologist. "Yeah, he did that stupid thing [insert event here], but damn, he wrote and recorded SOTT, so give him the benefit of the doubt."

Ok, ok, I cannot imagine not being able to see musical genius in the compilation of SOTT! There is such a variety of styles in there while still boasting a rather impressive cohesiveness between the songs. Tsk, tsk, must be comments from people new to the music.

The beauty of Prince is in the diversity. I believe that anybody who likes music would find at least one album in the catalogue that they like. There is so much variation it is unbelievable.

What we have here is a new fan who has come into Prince via the albums most suited to his personal tastes. For me, it was the Diamonds and Pearls album, before that I had dismissed Prince as 'that little bloke who screams a lot!', now I have all the albums and love most of them. I didn't dig SOTT the first few listens, especially the first disk, but now I listen to it often.

The important thing here is that we have a new fan and should make them feel welcome. We shouldn't make them feel small or wrong because they don't like a particular album. Prince is a unique experience, once you are into the music it's hard to get out. Unless you have been there since the beginning, there has to be something to draw you in, you start with something accesable, like D&P or Purple Rain and then, when you are getting used to it, you seek out another and are surprised to find how different it is. Then you try something new, only this time you don't like it, so you go for the next one. Then there's another and another and again, they are all different. Then one day there is nothing new and you come back to one of those lesser liked albums, only this time you are hearing it with different ears, now you suddenly hear what surely wasn't there before. Then you come to the realisation that there is so much more out there, that's when you need to hear the boots and find the unreleased stuff. One day you sit there and you start trying to take it all in, that's when it hits you, the genius that is Prince.

So welcome xpsiter, glad you have found experiences that you like. Keep trying the other stuff and I am sure you will find others. The joy of discovery is a great one.
RIP sad
