Haven't seen the video, but I always thought he was imitating him on My Name is Prince with all the "dah!" and "whoo!" not to mention the references to saving your face & being king, etc.

This topic has been debated ad infinitum. The February 1997 performance on the Chris Rock Show and the Michael Jackson squeal midway through Face Down, is Prince's way of setting the record straight.

If you go back into your annals of Prince history, Prince was in the middle of his Love4OneAnother charity tour, and eventually played Honolulu, Hawaii, for Prince's then-1-year wedding anniversary to Mayte Garcia.

It is well documented that Michael Jackson held a concert in Honolulu and reviews said that most of his concert was pre-recorded, ala Milli Vinilli.

So when Prince performed Honolulu a few weeks later (I know, I was there), one of Prince's constant remarks was "is this live or is this Memorex?" You can also say "real music by real musicians" quote Prince kept on saying back in 2002 through present day.

Long story short, Prince took a stab at Michael Jackson saying his singing was partly / mostly fake dring MJ's concerts in the late 1990s.

Take it for what it's worth.

During the Chris Rock performance, Prince bangs a few keys on the keyboard, screams like Michael Jackson, screams "Is this thing on??!??!" into his microphone, and then does a right leg kick and slaps his knee.

1st understand that the chris rock per4mance was lip synched since it was taking straight from his per4mance at roseland a few weeks prior. this is the same night that the chris rock interview was conducted and portions from the somebody's somebody video was done. if any have the cassette of jam of the year/face down and run the audio against the chris rock show per4mance, u will c its the same backing music etc ...
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I admire both Prince's and Michael's careers and I found the Chris Rock Show performance of "Face Down'' great! It was humorous, theatrical and Prince even manages to make off-key chords on the piano sound cool and in place. And the MJ kick and Heee-hee! was surprising and delightful.
If I was Mike, I'd have to laugh at that part, too.
That's interesting if it's true that Prince's performance was a commentary on lip-synching by Mike. That would put it in a whole 'nother light. lol
