How great was NPG from '93-96?

I was watching Prince's appearance on the Late Show with Letterman from 12/'94 and in retrospect how amazing Prince and the band sounded. At the most tumultuous period of his career, he was able to express his pain and frustration through his lyrics and performance. It's almost as if he is trying to emulate the sound of grunge singer-songwriters with his lower-register singing and phrasing.

But also it's interesting to witness the contrast between his all male backing band and great backing bands of other great artists. In terms of being able to jam at the drop of dime in any city, musical chops and even songwriting the NPG was perfect for him. Of any major Black recording artist the NPG was his career's version of The Curtis Mayfield experience (Curtis Mayfield's band with legendary Lucky Scott on bass and Henry Gibson on percussion) and Maze featuring Frankie Beverly.

And the songs from this era "Count The Days", "The Good Life", "Interactive", "Days Of Wild", "I Hate U" etc. was just as experimental as his eighties work.

i always loved this era!
i love that band: michael-sonny-morris-tommy-mayte-0+>.
it's a shame that music was overshadowed by the whole record company battle thing that was goin on.
i saw him at the paladium, NYC in 93 or 94 and that was one of the greatest shows ever. he just played his ass off for over 3 hours. that shit was so funky.
i miss that period....

I think that it was his best band, with only the Sign o' the Times/Lovesexy era coming close. But if you read some interviews with bandmates during this period, they weren't too thrilled. Off the top of my head, I remember one in which Tommy Barbarella cited how much of his "live" music at the time was loops & samples.

The band dynamic is about as cliche' as you can get: controlling band leader and subordinate sidemen grate on each other's nerves while trying to preserve the band as long as possible (playing long never ending tours, ceaseless recording schedules and unpredictable jam sessions whenever and wherever) it's even more amazing and fascinating that Prince kept that band together as long as he did.

I liked the band but the look...too much make up, Tommy wearing dresses...It looked like a wizard of Oz stage show. The music was LIVE!!!!

There was so much uncertainty at that time...Gold was on the shelf, Slave on the face and the whole WB thang.

I wish he would release some that footage ... 18 & Over video was great

I don't know but his ego was a bit over the top. Like it is now.
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

i have a lot boots from that era and the only thing that i didn't really like from then was that he didnt change his setlist much. there are countless versions of The Ride that I could really do without.
Butthe music was quite muscular compared to all the other lucid bands.

Interesting to hear that coming from a Jimi fan. That 'Power Trio' he had going with Sonny and Michael was the closest he ever got to Band Of Gypsys IMO.

I liked the NPG during 93-94 the best, but yes, those years were great.
Something happened towards the late 90s that just made everything a bit weird.

I remain completely infatuated by this era... Newbies need to see "Love Sign" at the Today Show, "Interactive/Endorphinmachine" at VH1 Honors, and "Dolphin" at Letterman... Completely different from ANYTHING going down during those grunge years... Everything about Prince's look and performances during this time were so over the top and I loved every minute of it... I'm sure Mayte as muse had much to do with the rushed energy and theatrical aesthetic, all glammed up, colors bursting... The whole "NPG" as brand name thing was new (later played out for way too long), and there were plenty of interesting side projects -- a magazine, a ballet, TV specials, indie release of "TMBGITW," a CD-Rom, Glam Slam and Paisley happenings, and Prince's brief success (and seeming interest) as Internet pioneer... I was wowed by the tightness of the band and their ability to jam on ANY genre... Prince's layered vocals ("Love 2 The 9s," "Letitgo") and sampled loops at this time were pretty neat too... When Prince appeared on Oprah, I thought I was in store for another fascinating ride, but for me things kinda fizzled from there (just my opinion)... So, yeah, I fucking loved those years and all of the risks/chances Prince took with the NPG.

I agree..But, his whole attitude.."AURA" seemed UBER negative and really UNCOOL to me during that whole period..I think he was on drugs personally..
Not that thats an unusual thing for musicians..But in Prince's case I think it just made everything about him and his choices "clothes, hair, music, interviews ect..." simply OFF !

You think he was on drugs? I never got that impression. I think it was more a sign of the times - It was cool to be pissed off and angry in the 1990s - everybody was doing it lol.

Look at him...Look at his erratic behavior..look at his hair, clothes, extreme weight loss...shitty unoriginal sample filled music...(and live shows)
rappers..hip hop dancers...crazy interviews..name changes..drawing on his face..losing most of his casual fans..becoming an international joke..releasing garbage to the public and thinking that was a good way to free himself from a contract...ect..wacky

that's what tommy was better suited 4 cause his solo's never leaped off the page imo ..but yes this was his best band EVER!!!! so funky drool he needs 2 get them back instead of any incarciration of his bands
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

all i got to say is that if that era had not happened, we wouldn't have the Prince we have today. Free, making his own rules and doing what he thinks best suits his career.

take what you want from that cuz a lot of debate went into this in the early part of the 00s and a lot of ppl were happy with the development of Prince and a lot of ppl were not.

I have always thoroughly LOVED this incarnation of the NPG the best nod Prince's fearlessness in everything during this era was just epic and the music kept pace with that in every way. The energy and creativity during this period was just excellent. Since he was so balls out, I often wonder if our anticipation of the "Dawn" was somehow ruined because of the grandest of expectations based on the boldness in which he approached everything about his music at the time.

I'm so glad I got to experience the excitement of being a Prince fan during this time. That time can never be re-created for someone who didn't go through it themselves.

It really is. The music really stands on its own and unfortunately Prince won't be remembered by the broader music community for his contributions during these years. Oh well, at least we got to bear witness to greatness.
