Reminds me of when I as 13, i had posters of prince on my wall, like any kid would of their musical hero, anyway one evening, an older relation of mine was in the room, and he turned to me and said, Prince is a ....., was odd coz it was the first time I actually noticed that he was coloured but it did shatter a certain colour blindness that i had, it was almost like losing a certain part of childhood. Not sure if that makes any sense.

As the original poster, please let me apologize for ruffling feathers....frankly, I'm a bit surprised and dissapointed that this issue has not previously been raised since the name "TeddyBlackFace" (TBF) has been used several times in the four (4) months since I've been a member and I would imagine many times prior to my membership and this post.

Nevertheless, I feel compelled to explain the intent of my TBF thread since there is discourse and speculation concerning the content.

First, however, as a new Orger, and since I am a black woman, I was surprised and offended, to say the least, to hear the username "TeddyBlackFace" bantered around a couple months ago. But, being new to the Org. I assumed that the discussion we are now having had already taken place and that there was some common understanding amongst Orgers of its use. How would I know differently? The name has been used on the Org prior to my membership.

However, when it was again mentioned last week in a couple threads, and it was said that Orgers thought it might be Prince, I again questioned its use. I was both offended by its use (because of what I understand BlackFace to mean) and the implication that someone would falsely lead people to believe Prince would use this as a screen name. For the record, I do not believe it is Prince.

The term "BlackFace" in today's world is used both as the name of a music group and as a descriptor of the historical minstrel shows. It is for that reason that I or anyone cannot truly identify if "TeddyBlackFace" is a racial slur or if the Orger is making some other kind of statement or just didn't know.

I decided to craft a discussion about this phantom "TeddyBlackFace," both to understand/identify the Org Members' acceptance of this name (since none had apparently complained previously); and to determine if in fact it was prince.

I started the thread is response to the questions asked in the thread last week--I offered other Orgers the option of determining just who TBF is, (was he a good character, a bad character, a singer, dancer, teacher, truck driver, mechanic, fantasy or reality?). This also provided the option of creating a character that was acceptable and could be viewed in terms other than the minstrel role. There was no response, so I continued with a complimentary description.

It should be noted that it is possible someone could be unaware of the derogatory nature of such a name, especially if they grew up in a foreign country where the historical scars of slavery in America are not a part of their history. (At this point, I was not drawing any conclusions, just gathering information.) Again, for all I know, I may have been the only person offended.

Then another Orger added a statement referring to his or my sanity returning. I viewed that comment as rather telling. It was then that I added more to the story. Offering an explanation of why the character was called "TeddyBlackFace". (He got into a fight and lit the guy up--the ashes were on his face.) Not so much in a minstrel sense.

Then an Orger posted a blackface picture. I felt that, that and similar displays would serve to answer the question of who TBF really was.

Furthermore, during the discussion, the Orger who calls him/herself TBF sent an orgpop note to me asking why I called him/her a troll. Having read the discourse of another Org member and overlooking that point, implies that the Orger is fully aware of the derogatory nature of his/her screen name and doesn't care. To me this confirmed that it was NOT Prince.

Then banter began about the orgnotes and orgpops all the while, however, the Ogers involved continued to imply that it was Prince.

It was then that I withdrew myself from the conversation and decided to erase the thread.

Be that as it may, the screen name TeddyBlackFace is derogatory and I respectfully request that it be banned from further use.

I hope this clarifies my intentions.
