I believe I hear Rosie Gaines on it. The lyrics/lead vox might be more recent, but the instrumentation seems 90s-ish to me. prince lost his funk when he went to traditional style instrumentation(horns) instead of synths playing the horn parts Agreed!!

LIES!!! first of all YAY FOR RADIOHEAD REFERENCES! I love In Rainbows. (I don't really listen to Kate Bush though :-\ ) And while you are in a different (and more agreeable in my opinion) mindset, a lot of the criticism he gets/has gotten has come from a person who has wanted another Purple Rain. I remember playing Planet Earth recently in an art class, and another student saying "Ugh, Old Prince was great, but I don't know about this" I guess the point the I was trying to make was that sometimes when Prince tries to experiment, people are easy to be more conservative and criticize something new because it differs from what they're comfortable with, and what works for them.

I've got one O2 show on CD, and it ain't funky, at all! It must not be fun dancin' like Bruce Springstein while Chelea Rogers is playin'...2 bad 4 ya Ha! Chelsea Rogers is a Joss Stone ripoff, complete with cheesy 70's sound! That shit ain't funky. Put that next to Let's Work! It's no comparison. Old Prince is better than Prince after 1998!

A lot of people even on this site.. Prince will always be funky ! Even tho' I think he has advanced beyond the stage where Funk stays "FONKY" Prince from 78-88 was "FONKY" this person we see today is playing funky music but in the same way that he would play a funky cover of a sly stone or james brown tune..Its vegasesque which is about as far away as you can get from being TRULY FONKY ! Prince with his Pubic hairs hanging out and rocking his Hohner jammin with Andre and Dez and making everyone in the room want to loosen up their hair and get Wild & FREE ... is FONKY ! This dude we see now is just a few steps away from "james brown in his final years territory" Funky but with a suit and tie on ! Right on! /peace Manki

Prince has never been all about funk, that's just part of his style. I don't think he could limit himself to just one thing.
When you see Prince live you see he hasn't lost anything except maybe hip flexibility. But he's had trouble capturing his mastery on record lately. My feeling is he gets an idea for a record that starts strong, and he goes through the motions somewhat in order to finish it--ie. he layers beautiful harmonies all over a weak melody/lyric. Around the Black Album, I feel Prince started to focus less on composition of songs and more on their arrangement. My Legacy

Whether that 60 year old still fits yours taste that's for you to decide but being old doesn't mean you can't be funky. People may say James Brown was a caricature of his old days by the 80's and 90's but he was WAY funkier than most of the people doing music in those 2 decades. That's why I responded the way I did. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

ye speaketh the truth. funk is only one genre Prince has mastered. any musician also wants to please their listeners, and some times i think he wants to please too many people, or cover too many grounds at once. for example, if he came out with an all-funk album, from the first track to the end, then the nay-sayers would have to re-think the willie nelson/bruce springstein dance moves when he slapped the chicken grease on them. lawd knows tis the truth ruth. sos's confusion aside,
my reference to willie nelson and springstein is motivated by this: 1) there was a time when Prince himself, don't know where but some of y'all will, admonished his audience and said something like "clap on the 2 and 4, this ain't a Bruce Springstein concert." not the exact words, but something like that. 2) 2ndly, the way i also see it, is that some people who can't even dance or pick up an instrument and make music are questioning the funkiness of a man who has been doing his thang for almost 30 years...when Prince shows up at any gig, everybody knows he's gonna turn it out.
