Well, I know how you feel about this, but I thought the Rainbow Children was great, and that was only a few years ago.

Not great song-for-song great, or pop potential great, but creative and cohesive and musical. Also weird, and unconcerned with musical or thematic boundaries. To me it truly was the first real "Prince" album since Graffiti Bridge.

And the album proved to be very controversial (at least to the 10 people who heard it) as half of them think it's a masterpiece and half of them think it's the biggest piece of shit he ever did.

The last three records have had some okay stuff on them, but they feel way too simple. They're restrained, no goofy narration, no going past 45 minutes, no obvious theme. Just nice bland pop songs.

And it's worked to some extent. The albums haven't been real hits, but his image in popular culture is better than it's been in a long, long time. Meanwhile his fans hate him!

I respect the creative attempts made on TRC but that was over seven years ago and was a small blip when you look at his entire career over the past 15 years. I could care less about his image!!! I want quality music. lol

Define "Quality Music". I think it funny that some of the moderators of Prince.org are some of the most "negative" prince fans. And then u guys wonder why Prince doesn't like the site lol.

Prince does and will always put out quality music. U might not like it it but that's a whole different thing. Prince has way too much talent to not put out quality music.

Folks when Prince was young what u heard was pure youthful genius, He didn't have the chops and experience to do most of the music he does now. He had to learn to write songs that fit into well established genre norms. Learning your craft is not easy. Prince has gone from being a youthful innovator to an accomplished craftsman. In a way he has merged the two. Someone earlier said that anyone could write "call my name". That is a great song and trust most songwriters never write that well, What some people don't like about that song is that it lacks (for the most part) any left-field eccentric stuff. What u are missing looking for the weird is missing the perfect. And that song is perfectly crafted. It will sound perfect 50 years from now while other songs he wrote will sound perfectly weird (both are good).

The reason that Prince has always tried to work with his heroes is because Prince respects the craft of creating music not just the shock value of the new and strange.

None of the people that have been named as old-timers that are putting out good music are half as talented as Prince. While they are all talented artists (some even legendary) their talent is very localized, very niche oriented, Planet Earth alone is more expansive and creative then most of their whole careers.

I think Prince is extremely creative and productive for a 50 yr old that has created so much so differently for 30 yrs. The glass is more than half-full people but some of u are too selfish, too jaded, unrealistic, and limited in your perspective to see it.

Damn Tricky99 that was so on point it was scary. But to be fair, not all the moderators moderate the Prince: M&M section, such as sosgemini. I found that out a couple of years ago. Aside from that, I co-sign with everything you said. clapping thumbs up!
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

hey, that's good and dandy that you feel that way yet you forgot another description about "Call My Name"...redundant...been there done that...autopilot paint by numbers stuff for prince...if that's what gets you off, more power to you.

now, i love how you felt compelled to place judgment and characterize those whom have an opposing view to you...cause you know, you can't be content with your own personal opinion of the work, ya gotta reinforce it by placing negative traits on others. oh yeah, that's classy. lol

Well I have read your stuff for years and find nothing classy about u either so we are even. As far as "call my name" beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I found it to be an instant classic for me. How is it redundant? Or do u consider any r&B ballad he writes or will write redundant? Is Prince suppose to create songs unlike anything ever written by himself and anyone else? How is that even possible? What rock, pop, r&b, funk, rap, jazz tune could Prince create that would not be "redundant"? Much of what u write on these boards is "redundant". Its part of the human condition.

It's redundant when it's done to death...but if you like it, super....more power to you...unlike you, i am not going to belittle you for your opinion.
