Question for those who feel that Prince has lost his funk edge... When did he lose it and what was the closest he come to getting it back?

he's under pressure 2 tame the beast tht is his funkyness. he was very funky at o2...

he hasn't lost it...IMHO he just seems complacent...he seems to live in a vacuum and is surrounded by "yes" men who sedate his extincts thus leaving his musical genius in limbo. Space for sale...

F.U.N.K. is pretty awesome for being a recent Prince song

Prince has not lost a thing. If he would just release cd's without changing the content at the last minute or editing tracks 2 death he would be fine.

we all lose it with age....prince lost it after 87 Robert Altman made Gosford Park in his 70s. David Lynch made Mulhuland Dr. in his late 50s. Bruce Springsteen released Magic this year at what? 57? Miles David released Tutu at 60...The list could go on and on...Heck, even this year we have Francis Ford Coppola (68) turning away from the mainstream world and returning to his indie/punk roots with his new film Youth Without Youth...while the film is receiving poor reviews most critics are acknowledging the return to artistic form. I agree with this to an extent, as it has been that way since PR with P, he seriously needs someone to stand up to him and kick his ass back into gear sometimes, that is why so many argue here, they get their PE and then see P live, a total contradiction of what he is actually like. but that is P, the way we love and truly adore him, enigmatic If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

what a funny question. you need to stop using Willie Nelson as a meter to understand Prince's funk...it's okay though, we understand.

Prince lost the funk, after he released Crystal Ball(1998). He hasn't been close to regaining it, since, I haven't bought a Prince album, in 10 years.
I've got one O2 show on CD, and it ain't funky, at all!

Prince is still funky (his Chelsea Rodgers bass-playing is phenomenal, much in the vein of Let's Work, ghost notes and all). But F.U.N.K. seems old to me. I believe I hear Rosie Gaines on it. The lyrics/lead vox might be more recent, but the instrumentation seems 90s-ish to me.

I don't think that Prince could lose the Funk if he wanted to...In Prince's case the Funk follows him around like the lamb...follows Mary.
I think that as Prince has matured, knowing He is a successful artist, Prince can slip into Jazz if it makes him more comfortable. Prince has always been more love song oriented really....not that some of those songz are not Funky....yet songz like, Adore, Slow Love, Insatiable....is music that hansomely suits him. A lot of people dont know what funk even is..
A lot of people even on this site.. Prince will always be funky ! Even tho' I think he has advanced beyond the stage where Funk stays "FONKY" Prince from 78-88 was "FONKY" this person we see today is playing funky music but in the same way that he would play a funky cover of a sly stone or james brown tune..Its vegasesque which is about as far away as you can get from being TRULY FONKY ! Prince with his Pubic hairs hanging out and rocking his Hohner jammin with Andre and Dez and making everyone in the room want to loosen up their hair and get Wild & FREE ... is FONKY ! This dude we see now is just a few steps away from "james brown in his final years territory" Funky but with a suit and tie on !

On record perhaps he doesn't go there anymore, but anyone that was at the aftershow when he laid down the 'chaos and disorder' set earlier this year knows he aint lost a thing. Infact - that was one of the funkiest things London's ever witnessed "London, i've adopted a name that has no pronounciation.... is that cool with you?"

Oh and to answer this question, I, and maybe just I think Prince is a shell of hs fonky-slammin'-baddass-assholish (scratch that) former self. With the exception of his diss song.
