American Bandstand. His shyness was painfully evident. I can't remember the question Dick Clark asked, but Prince responded by holding up 4 fingers.

The first time I ever saw a picture of him was in the back of Jet Magazine. Must've been around 1976-77. It was a b&w promotional ad for his "For You" album. He had a huge afro and was wearing a leather jacket. I thought "OMG! He is so cute!" Does ANYONE have this pic?

No,I don't have that picture, but I have the Mapplethorphe picture, the Bookcover and his Press Kit from the 2nd album which had the leather jacket but he had fine hair not the Afro. I used to watch VIDEO MUSIC BOX and that was on after school on Ch 21 or 31 in N.Y. . It showed Prince videos and Hip,Hop videos and Rap also Video Soul with Donnie Simpson and Video Vibrations. BET in my opinion and Donnie Simpson's show were way better than MTV any day. Yes, Friday Night videos,Night Flight, U68, and Hot Tracks showed Prince's Videos. The first album had a Gatefold picture of him with the Afro on the Inner Sleeve while he is on the bed with the Acoustic Guitar. Prince was always Hot and his music Fantastic. When I saw that tape with Prince from Bandstand I actually thoght the Finger thing was Intriguing and quite Cool. It was Different. Yes,I felt Dick Clark Insulted him with the way he talked about Minneapolis and how Prince had a few years left from Puberty and all. I think Prince didn't like the comment as he made a bit of a face and then changed into a different stance. But Dick Clark probably didn't mean it the way it came out just being DICK CLARK. I do think however Prince definitely DESERVED more AMA'S in 1985 and that Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie should not have RAINED on PRINCE'S PARADE!

Actualy, he already knew that he wasnt gonna say anything when Dick Clark interviewed him. I too thought it was cool. He's probaly the only one who went on there that didn't kiss Dick Clark's ass. God, I love his quirkieness.

People are Always Busting on Prince for his ECCENTRIC BEHAVIOR and his MYSTIQUE. They just don't get him and think him either WEIRD or STRANGE. I think it's quite WONDERFUL Actually. I always dug that side of him also. Well, people always call me WEIRD and STRANGE. It Seems when you are Different and an Artist people just can't RELATE and write it off to KOOKINEss. I think more people really ought to see Prince's Charm. He is the ARTIST and he has his own Rules. Gotta Love him and the Rules...in which he lives and plays...

i love telling this story..i was 4 years old when me,my mother, and my sister were going to pick up some family photos on a saturday 1979. while waiting for the pictures to be picked up..i was occupied by the television..american bandstand was on and you know who was on with that gold outfit on, earrings and all..singing i wanna be your lover (anyone remember the controversey ove the lyric..i wanna be your mama and your sister too?) the same day my sister purchased the album "prince" and...that was the day that forever changed my life...
the moral of the story: goes to show how impressionable young children are when it comes to what they watch on tv..

TRON

It was probably the "When Doves Cry" video when I was 8 but I don't know how I would've seen it since we didn't have cable until 1986. It must've been on some non-music channel. I loved him right away and consider that the beginning of my relationship with Prince. It wasnt' until 5 years later though that I had the money and was old enough to start collecting his music.

It's funny, I do remember this but not because it made a great impression on me!!!

It was on Siskel and Ebert (the movie critic guys) and they were reviewing Purple Rain, and I thought, this guy can't act, and he's kinda ugly.

A friend actually drug me to Purple Rain (we had to go with a parent cause it had an R rating which it probably wouldn't have today). And I was blown away!!!

Prince showed me that even a shy, awkward kid can come out of his shell and be cool!

The first time I saw Prince was on a video show on TV...it was either "I wanna be your lover" or "Dirty Mind" video...I don't know what I thought...I was about 8 or 9 so I guess I thought what every girl thinks at that age..."Wow, he's cute smile" His videos were in heavy circulation in Detroit on "The Scene" at that time...I think I really fell in "ga-ga" with him with the "Little Red Corvette" video.

Cool! You remember U68 too? I think that was when I caught the first glimpse of our hero. That was when I saw the 1999 & Contorversy video. I remember dancing around the living room with my family when that came on. I also have other vivid memories of seeing Prince & Price-related vids on MTV, BET, Video Music Box, Video Soul, etc. Remember New York Hot tracks?

Dick asked him how long he had been playing music, I think.
According to Dave Hill, who wrote ~Prince: a Pop Life~, Dez Dickerson said that Prince deliberately snubbed Clark. In fact he said, before they went onstage, Prince told the band NOT to talk to him. The purpose for that being to just be odd, and mysterious, I guess. Well...it worked! LMAO

Yes,in Brooklyn we didn't have cable except for HBO remember and U68 was the only station besides Hot Tracks on 7,Friday Night Videos or Video Music Box. U68 cracked me up and anybody who remembers it will remember that anytime of the day you put it on PAUL KING was On or Paul Young Come Back And Stay. I wanted to Vomit whenever those 2 were on. They showed Prince's early videos, but reception was so Poor and we still Taped it Fuzz and all. What a Panic. I'll Never Understand why well I do Know but Nebraska had MTV before Brooklyn because of our Wiring. We had to get Approval from the City or something. Bullshit really. Politics. But what ever happened to Paul King with that shit song PRIDE?

I DO! I was just thinking about that show as I was reading the posts before I read your post. I first saw Prince on one of them video shows when I was 4 at my Grandparents house. Little Red Corvette came on and I asked my Mom who the guy wearing the high heeled boots was and she told me that it was Prince. I remember thinking that he was weird yet I was kinda intriged but not enough to keep watching. He caught my attention with the 1999 video shortly after that and then the next year, the When Doves Cry video took me in.

I was born and raised in NYC and I remember that in the mid-80's, Prince was everywhere in New York. I would watch New York Hot Tracks and every week, Fridays I think, a Prince video came on. One week they had a whole show to him(1985). Plus the other video shows like Friday Night Videos and Night Tracks. I didn't realize how much of that I remembered. I miss being a kid sometimes.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

B4 I was a fan I would see videos and shit and be like, "he's cool". but then the prince album came out and I really dug. The first thing I saw that I waited for to record and was a ddep fan at the time was the Endorphinemachine performance @ the VH1 Honors. He hadn't been on TV in ages, just as I was becoming a fan. I rember it was just mesmorizing. I was in shock, not was I expected AT ALL, but TIGHT AS FUCK!!! I also rember buying Come in the summer when I was in Louisiana on vascation. My aunt was like "He's a fucking freak, don't play that in my house". I still love my aunt though. She let me stay at her house when I went down for Mardi Gras!!!(No Hotel Costs!!!)

The very first time I actually rember seeing him was in 85 I think(so I was 7) and it was Purple rain. Which is also the first time I ever saw Tits. THANK U PRINCE!!!!!
